Zimmerman Interviewed

Wednesday Jun 20, 2018

One half of U21 management speaks!

Newly appointed U21 joint Manager Gareth Zimmerman took time out to catch up with Matt Panter of the Tamworth Herald. Long-time Lambs fan Zimmerman opened by revealing his pride at taking on the position. Previously with Bolehall Swifts, Gareth has linked up with Lambs legend Gary Smith to forge a new Lambs under-21s management team after the departure of Lee Fryers.

“I have supported Tamworth for as long as I can remember so to get this chance is fantastic" he said. “I have a full-time job so, for me, football is very much a passion and it means a lot to be involved with my home-town club.”

Zimmerman says the chance to work with Smith, a firm fans’ favourite from 1995-2001, has also left him thrilled. “I watched him play for Tamworth and he was a hero of mine,” said Zimmerman. “So it feels like Roy of the Rovers stuff at the minute. Gary and I have really clicked and I think what people will see from us is passion and a real desire to help get Tamworth going as a club.”

And Zimmerman is hopeful the pair can continue with the success of recent seasons. “We have had good conversations with Mike Fowler,” he said. “He wanted Smudge and I to understand the ethos of the club, the values and the mission statement. We have gone through what he expects of us and that’s important because we all need to be aligned."

“I know, as a club, we want to bring more local lads through and I know there are some great lads out there in Tamworth. That is something that I am really keen to see come about. Hopefully we can enjoy a great season all round so people in the town can embrace some good times again.”
