 Lambs victorious against Kettering!

Tamworth Under 21s started their league campaign in spectacular fashion as they put five goals past Kettering Under 21s on a fine Saturday morning at the Lamb Ground. The Lambs came flying out of the blocks and with little over two minutes on the clock, Jay Thorne fired a shot past the visitors’ keeper to give Tamworth an early lead. That goal set the tone for the match in truth – the home side controlling the game from start to finish and not really giving their opponents a sniff at goal.

Tamworth threatened to add to their lead several times with Junior Mpofu firing over and Alex Smith heading into the keeper’s arms from a corner. But it was Tyrone Ofori who doubled the lead in the 16th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Kyle Ambris’ shot was parried by the keeper.

Ofori then put the home side even further in front just four minutes later. Mpofu avoided several weak challenges to put the ball on a plate for Ofori who grabbed his second of the day. The home side continued to press for a fourth with Stefan Mason and Mpofu both firing agonizingly over the bar before the half-time whistle.

Much the same after the interval and just three minutes into the second-half, Callum Devlin squared the ball for Mason who coolly slotted home to the keeper’s right. Devlin almost got a goal himself, but his close-range header was ruled out for offside. The tempo slowed after that, but Tamworth kept the pressure up and created a number of chances – Owen Hall going closest as his shot hit the upright.

With little over ten minutes remaining, substitute Kyle Hayden got on the scoresheet after stabbing home Thorne’s cross from close-range. It put the seal on a brilliant start to the campaign for Tamworth who in truth could’ve won by even more in a very one-sided contest.

The U21's return to action with an away trip against Lutterworth Town on Saturday morning.
