Trio Sign for the First team

Thursday Aug 1, 2019

Three Academy players were told to report to the Lamb at 1.00pm today and when they arrived they had the surprise of their lives when they were told they were signing for the first team! Alex Smith, Tom Parker and Ryan Tait are just the latest batch of players to show the talent being produced by the Tamworth FC Academy.

First up to sign was ALEX SMITH who is from Sutton Coldfield. He is currently half way through his A level studies at Wolverhampton Grammar School. Alex, a centre half, has been with the club just over a year and has already featured for the first team in a couple of games last season. He first caught the eye of Walsall before moving onto Burton Albion. Alex has featured in all of the development pre-season fixtures and has noticed the difference in standard between U21 games and men’s football, which the Development Squad are moving into this season. His immediate ambition is to break into the first team and hopes to build a career in professional football.
Mike Fowler, Academy Director, said of Alex, “He is an old school centre half and he has shown some real maturity against very good strikers at a higher standard. He is learning all the time and what sets him apart is his mentality which is fantastic. He is strong minded and will be able to cope with the mental and physical aspects of first team football. He is very fit and also quick for a centre half.”

RYAN TAIT is a 16 years old midfielder who has caught the eye of the first team management. He is just moving into the 6th form at The Pingle Academy in Swadlincote to study Sciences and Maths. Ryan has completed one season with the Lambs representing the 16s, 18s and 21s. He has already impressed for the development team in pre-season scoring two goals and standing out in midfield against players much older than himself.
“He has been on our radar for the past season” said Mike. “He is a real talent, has a great engine and is playing at a level beyond his years. Last season he played for the youth team against our U21s and he completely ran the game. He has done very well, and I am delighted with his progress.

The final signing is TOM PARKER who is also a local lad having just completed his GCSEs at Rawlett. Tom was first spotted by West Bromwich Albion who signed him as a 12 years old. After three seasons with Albion Tom moved onto Coventry City, who he has been with for the past two seasons. Tom is a midfielder and wanted to sign for a local club where he can enjoy playing his football. The highlight of his football career so far is scoring a goal from the half way line when playing for Coventry City. Of Tom Mike Fowler said, “He has unbelievable pace and tenacity for such a small lad. I have not seen a player as quick as him! He has shown that he can deal with the physical side of the game. Tom is a great addition to Tamworth Football Club and as a 16 years old he has a great future in the game.
