Wednesday Oct 7, 2020

The FA cup is renowned for providing special fixtures for teams of all levels. And the magic of the cup has certainly been experienced for Tamworth FC in the past. The Lambs best FA Cup runs have seen them reach the third round on three occasions.

Tamworth FC’s Best FA Cup Runs
In the FA Cup, the long-term football betting odds to win the trophy might never be in the underdogs' favour - Brentford are the top-tipped team outside the Premier League at 100/1 - but individual games can throw up some upsets. Tamworth have pulled off a few FA Cup giant-killings of their own, and come so close to even more. The Lambs three trips to round three have come in the 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2011/12 seasons.

The 2005/06 season saw the Lambs reach the third round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. The first round fixture saw Tamworth overcome AFC Bournemouth away in a 2-1 victory. In the second round, it was a trip up north for the Lambs to take on Hartlepool United. Tamworth were able to hold out for another 2-1 win, which saw them into their first-ever third round draw. The draw was made and it was a tough trip away to then Championship side Stoke City, who boasted ex-Premier League players such as Luke Chadwick and Paul Gallagher. The Lambs were able to earn a replay after playing out a very respectable 0-0 draw in the initial fixture. The return leg, held at the Lamb, ended in a 1-1 draw, which meant the match went to a penalty shootout. After an extraordinary effort from Tamworth, they were beaten 5-4 on penalties by Stoke.
Despite the loss, the Lambs held there heads high after putting up an excellent fight with a Championship side over 180 minutes.

After such an excellent FA Cup run in the previous season, the Lambs were at it again in the 2006/07 season, again advancing as far as the third round. The first and second round saw Tamworth beat overcome sides by a score of 2-1, in a repeat of the previous season's victories. In the first round, they won away at fellow non-league side Burton Albion and won away in the second round at Rushden & Diamonds. The third round saw Tamworth take on Norwich City at the Lamb, with the Canaries running out 4-1 winners with two goals each from Darren Huckerby and the now real-estate-TV Star, Dion Dublin.

Tamworth’s most recent advance to the third round of the FA Cup came in the 2011/12 season. The first round saw Tamworth overcome a resilient Hinckley United. After drawing 2-2 in the initial fixture away at Hinckley, the Lambs clinched the replay after a last-minute winner scored by Kieron St Aimie gave them a 1-0 win at home. Another exciting game in the second round saw the Lambs again score another last-minute winner to beat Gateshead 2-1. This then set up a huge third-round tie against Premier League side Everton. The Lambs put up a valiant effort but were beaten 2-0 by an Everton side containing multiple international players such as Tim Howard, Marouane Fellaini, Phil Neville and Landon Donavon.

It’s now been almost a decade since Tamworth FC got to the third round of the FA Cup, but the hope is always there to reach that height again and perhaps even further.
