 'Smudger' in caretaker charge!

Lambs legend, and current U21 Joint Manager Gary Smith will lead the first team into our key Southern League fixture at home to Bedworth United this Saturday. Smith was placed in caretaker charge on Monday afternoon, and will need no introduction to many Lambs fans, having made 221 club appearances in a 6 season spell.

Smith will be assisted by U19 Lead Coach Andrew Danylyszyn, who as well as holding the UEFA A Licence, has worked as part of Paul Cox's first team management group at then National League side Guiseley, after initially linking up with Cox at Mansfield Town.

Smith caught up with Matt Panter of the Tamworth Herald following his temporary appointment. "I am buzzing to be honest" he said. "I have always had dreams of being a manager and coming back to Tamworth to work with the under-21s was the icing on the cake."

"I never thought in my head that I might be standing in the dugout as caretaker manager for the first team. However long I am in the role, I will be giving it everything. I just want to help the club go forward. Everyone is suffering, we all are - it hurts to see the club in this position."

"I want the players to go out and show pride and passion. They need to pick themselves us. They are low on confidence but there's still an opportunity for them to turn this around. I think some of the players here might need to be shown some love. They might need reminding they are quality players - that's why they were brought here in the first place."

"They should be asserting themselves against teams at this level. We know we should be doing better but we can change that. Hopefully I can get them playing with smiles on their faces again. And I really hope the fans come and back us this weekend. We need them to be that extra man. If they come and back the lads and show them some love, I am sure we will get the results on the pitch."
