Mills' jigsaw taking shape

Four signings, two more confirmed, two in discussion ...

Those were the statistics of a satisfying morning's work for Tamworth manager Gary Mills today as his squad reported for the first pe-season training session at Whittington Barracks.

It represented a massive piece in the jigsaw as Mills prepares for the 2007-08 campaign in Blue Square North.

The captures include vastly experienced defender Rob Ullathorne who was last with Mills' former club Notts County and another ex-Magpie Jake Sheridan, a midfielder.

Also putting pen to paper were strikers Justin Jackson and Matty Williams while two players who had earlier agreed terms, Rikki Bains and Dominic Langdon, signed on the dotted line.

In addition, among those who reported for training and are in discussion over terms were Dave Bampton and Dominic Roma.

Ullathorne, 35, started his career with Norwich City in 1990 and six years later had a seven-month spell with Spanish club Osasuna before Leicester City paid £600,000 for his services. Since 2000 he has had two spells with Shefield United, played for Northampton in early 2004 before joing Notts County.

Sheridan, who is 21 next Sunday, plays in midfield and made more than 30 first team league and cup appearances in two years with County.

Jackson came to Tamworth last season but he and the club were frustrated as attempts to get clearance following his spell in Australia ran into red tape. The Nottingham-born front runner has been involved in transfers totalling £413,000 and has got goals almost everywhere he has played.

He career since playing for Woking in 96-97 has taken in Notts County, Morecambe (twice), Rotherham, Halifax, Rushden and Accrington before his spell 'Down Under'.

Matty Williams, 24, once on Man United's books, ended the 'will he, won't he' speculation over his immediate future by committing himself to the club.

As first reported here on the official website last week, Rikki Bains and Dominic Langdon (ex-Rushden) had agreed terms. Those deals were formally concluded today.

Only just back from holidays abroad are Dave Bampton and former Lamb Dominic Roma and they are in talks with Mills. Utility man 'Bamps' joined Tamworth in May 2004 while full back Roma came to the Lamb on loan from Sheffield United for the last four months of the 05-06 season having had a brief spell at Boston.
