Shaw Speaks

Tom has say on Lambs return!

Matt Panter caught up with Tom Shaw last week to get the experienced midfielders thoughts on his Lambs return. Shaw was part of the Tamworth squad which won the Conference North title in 2009. After leaving Tamworth in 2010, though, he went on to become a popular player at Kidderminster Harriers, Cambridge United, Alfreton and Chester City.

“It’s great to be back" said Shaw. “Football can be a strange game and you never know what path it might take you down. I’m not sure whether I ever expected to come back but I am delighted to be back here. It’s a club where I have got some really good memories.

Shaw continued “Someone was just telling me that it was nine years ago that I was here last. I have been away and learnt about the game so hopefully I can pass some stuff on to the lads here now. It looks a good squad to me. There’s a nice blend with some experience through the spine but some young, talented lads as well. That was me last time around but I’m on the other side of the fence now."

“I have gone off and picked up experience along the way. I have got my badges, my A licence, as well because I see my long-term future in coaching. I just wanted to set myself up for when football finishes. Hopefully I have a few years left playing yet though. And I think part of my role is to come in and try to guide the lads with their decision making and make sure things are done properly.”

Shaw might have grown in stature during his time away from the club but some things don’t change.

“It’s good to see some old faces still going strong,” he said. You’ve got the likes of Buster (Belford) and Degsy (Bond) – the best kit men in the game! They are still going which is great to see. Everyone has made me feel really welcome coming back though. And I know a few of the players anyway. I have played against a few of them in the past and Aman Verma was with me at Kidderminster. He’s a top midfielder and I am looking forward to playing with him again and hopefully we can form a good partnership.”
