STAFFORD RANGERS 3 TAMWORTH 1
Tamworth travelled to a rain sodden Marston Road for the second of 4 matches in the Central Conference Cup mini league. The top 2 teams in the group of four will progress to the semi final and after suffering the previous 1 nil loss to Kidderminster just before Christmas the Lambs will need a change of luck against the remaining two opponents FC Reds (who play at Rushden and Diamonds) and Bromsgrove Rovers.
Against Stafford the only luck the Lambs had was bad and despite creating at least twice as many chances and having the Lions share of possession they just could not find the back of the net except on one occasion. The Rangers had a mix of youth and experience but struggled to cope with the impressive Brown who with Roscorla and Sturridge looked a useful combination. Stafford did look dangerous on the break, however, and on 16 minutes after the Lambs had wasted at least 5 chances and against the run of play their Chris Sterling was presented with a free header and duly scored giving Woakes no chance.
Davies and Dainty added to the list of `should haves’ before on 38 minutes Brown put Roscorla through for a one on one chance and he duly rounded the otherwise sharp looking keeper and made no mistake.
One all at half time and after the break the Lambs continued to dominate with another host of chances the best of which fell to Davies on 58 minutes, having his shot just tipped over then Sturridge missing an open goal and Hunte just missing and then a further golden chance falling to Davies who fired agonisingly just wide of the target. The game increasingly looked likely for a draw but late on Will Holyland who had had a good game took a bad injury and was substituted and soon after Stafford took an unlikely lead through a scrambled shot from a corner. Deep in injury time things got worse when the ball seemed to simply bounce off the head off a Stafford player and could have gone anywhere but after looping 15 yards in the air it found the top corner of the net as it was always destined to be that night.
Overall a great performance from Darren Fulford’s young side and all credit to Stafford Goal keeper Matt Sergeant whose efforts enabled his sides victory.
