Morrell Previews Bradford

Friday Aug 4, 2017

Season opener at The Lamb tomorrow!

Ahead of the build up to Saturday's Vanarama National League North season opener, Matt Panter of the Tamworth Herald caught up with Lambs boss Andy Morrell for his thoughts ahead of the new season. "The first block of games is key" he said. "You play so many early on, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, until September. If you don't start well you can find yourself chasing teams at the top from the first whistle."

Morrell continued "So we want a good start. Winning breeds confidence and early wins can kick-start your season. We will go out on Saturday afternoon, as the home side, and look to start on the front foot and just try to entertain the fans."

"I'm looking forward to getting started in the league now." he added. "For me, pre-season is the worst part of football. It's a means to an end. It's where you try and get your lads fit and get some structure to your play but what you really want is to play games that mean something. Defensively, I feel we have found that structure. That's good for me."

Morrell admitted that he was still looking for more in the final third though. "We have to be better as an attacking side, we can see that. Our forward play needs to improve. We have to be a lot more clinical but that will come with a little bit more coaching. The players we have brought in have done well. We have been disappointed with picking up a few injuries. But that's part and parcel of things and none are too serious."

The opening fixture of the season was an away draw against Brackley in 2016/17, and the Manager is keen to go one better this time around. "Bradford is a good first test for us" he said. "They have brought in some good players. They have signed Javan Vidal, who we know here and he has great ability. They have also signed Adam Boyes from Guiseley so we face a challenge. But hopefully with a good crowd behind us and home advantage we can get off to a positive start."
