Liverpool start defence of Champions League

Sunday Sep 15, 2019

Midweek European fixtures return this week with the Group Stages of the Champions League.

There is plenty of English interest this season’s European elite competition and all are hopeful of going all the way this season. It is always difficult to win this cup with the nature of the knockout rounds and selecting a winner is also not easy. It may be best to have a look at the first few group games and look at online casino usa for some action in the mean time. Holders Liverpool will be wanting to repeat as Champions, Tottenham will hope last year’s run to the final will give them the experience to go one step further and Manchester City will be needing an improved showing for their rich owners.

Manchester City are favourites to lift the silverware (10/3), followed by Barcelona (5/1), then holders Liverpool (13/2) and Real Madrid (9/1). Big spending PSG (10/1) and Juventus (11/1) will be looking to justify their spending with a deep run in the tournament. Tottenham are a large 25/1 despite their final appearance last season and Chelsea round out the English clubs as outsides (33/1) with their young squad and young manager.

Week 1 of the Group Stages sees Liverpool start their defence of their title with a very tricky tie at Napoli. Liverpool will start as slight favourites at 13/10, with the home side 2/1 and the draw 5/2. With only six group games, avoiding defeat away in Italy would be a decent start for the Champions.

Chelsea host Valencia and will need to collect as many home points in order to progress to the knockout stages. The Blues are slight odds on at 5/6 with Valencia 10/3 and the draw 13/5.

The standout tie on Tuesday evening is the Spanish giants Barcelona travelling to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund. This will be a tough and tight affair with both teams having a great chance to start the group stages strongly. Barcelona are 5/4 favourites, Dortmund are 2/1 and the draw 13/5.

On Wednesday Manchester City make the long trip to Shakhtar Donetsk aiming to get off to a winning start and are strong favourites at 3/10, with the draw 9/2 and the home side 9/1. City will be wary of not letting the underdog get ahead and hold on like Norwich managed to at the weekend.

Tottenham also make a long difficult trip to Athens to face Olympiacos. This will be a hostile atmosphere and Spurs will do well to come away with all the points despite being odds on 5/6 to do so.

Without doubt, though, the big game of Week 1 is most definitely in Paris where PSG host Real Madrid. For other big games try Both teams are hopeful of a long run in the Champions League and winning start will be important so they are not playing catch up. PSG are 5/6 to win the game, Real Madrid 11/5 and the draw 13/5.
