Doveridge Ladies 1 Tamworth Ladies 18

We spoke to Tamworth Ladies Manager Ryan Hamilton and player of the match Lily Smith.

 Tamworth Ladies Manager Ryan Hamilton:

I am Incredibly proud of the girls today, with almost a month since our last game and a Christmas break, to came to a heavy pitch and play the way we did is a credit to the girls.

I asked for a ruthless, relentless attitude out of possession, the girl showed me exactly that, we pressed high, won the ball back quickly and got our rewards. Doveridge were a credit to themselves, they really battled hard and tried to keep us at bay, they set up to frustrate and deny us and for the first few minutes they did, we hit the post three times in the first five minutes, then the girls relentless attitude and perseverance paid off with a great goal from Lily.

Again, the girls showed their quality and their desire to win, to win 18 - 1 on a heavy pitch after no competitive game for a month is a credit to the girls. Couldn’t be prouder of them today, it was great to see Lily score four, she more than earned her player of the match award. She dictated play, drove past defenders in one v one’s and opened up the game. All over the pitch we were fantastic though, the full backs adapting to their new roles, the centre midfielders controlling the game, Grace and Liv continuing their goal scoring runs up top. Really pleased and really proud today. We look forward to facing Walsall at home next week.

Player of the match Lily Smith:

We knew today’s game would take a little getting used to due to not playing for a couple of weeks. Having our first session back on Friday helped a few of us get back into good habits before today’s game. After the last game, we played on this pitch we knew it would be heavy and require more effort to play to our usual pace which I think we did very well. Everyone on the pitch put in a great effort which meant our pressing and movement of the ball was effective.

The girls I have met this season are the best squad I have played with. Everyone is willing to knuckle down and put in a hard graft but we also have a lot of fun and we’re never short of good conversation or high spirits. We have also had chance to get used to the way each of us play and have gelled very well, no one ever looks out of place on the pitch.

I am looking forward to seeing how our team play continues, regardless of results, it’s about the progression ready for seasons ahead. I’m excited to see us hopefully winning the league and being successful moving forward. Personally, I think my area of improvement is focussed on driving towards goal, I have a tendency to play the first available pass I see. For the rest of the season gaining confidence to take players on one to one is my main goal.

Tamworth Ladies play on Sunday 12th January 2020 against Walsall Ladies at The Lamb.
