THE NEWLY-formed Tamworth Under-21 team are raring to go for the start of the season...
Run in conjunction with the first-team, they will compete in the Midland Under-21 Football League under the guidance of manager, Lee Fryers, and assistant, Paul Harrison.
“Our overall aim is to develop young, talented footballers and produce future first-team players on a regular basis,” said Fryers. “We will be allowed to play three over-age players, so it will also enable the club to get game-time for the extended first-team squad and players coming back from injury.
“We had two successful trial days last month from which 30 players were selected to begin pre-season training at the start of July.
“The squad will be further trimmed down in readiness for the start of the League programme in September.
“The quality of the lads attending the trials was very good; there are a few that have already caught the eye of Andy Morrell, so that is an encouraging start.”
There are three pre-season friendlies arranged so far. It starts with a trip to Atherstone on Thursday, July 16th (kick-off 7.30pm) before travelling to Pelsall Villa on Monday, July 27th (kick-off 7.30pm) and then Continental Star at Rushall Olympic’s Dales Lane on Wednesday, July 29th (kick-off 7.45pm).
“These matches will all prove a good early test for us,” added Fryers. “They will see us come up against three good sides and are sure to give us an indication of where we’re at before the action gets underway for real.
“We’re really relishing the task of developing this young squad. We’re expecting it to be a competitive League and that will stand the lads in good stead as we aim to get a production line of talent into the first-team up and running.
“We hope that the Tamworth fans will support us.”
There will be regular Under-21 updates via our various media channels and in the Matchday Programme throughout the course of the 2015/16 season.
