Emirates FA Cup, Saturday 7 September

Thursday Sep 5, 2019

On Saturday Tamworth welcome Nuneaton Borough to the CR MOT Centre Community Stadium at the Lamb for an Emirates FA Cup 1st Round Qualifying tie. As a local derby, this is one of the stand out ties of the round and one that both sets of supporters will relish.

Tamworth and Nuneaton have a long history in the FA Cup and the match day programme will provide a breakdown of all the games that have been played between the teams. Since 1958 the clubs have been drawn against each other on no less than 8 times with a total of 11 games played when replays are taken into consideration. If we just focus on the 1Q Round, then the clubs faced each other at this stage of the competition in successive seasons in 1960 and 1961, with both games played at Manor Park. Tamworth won the first tie 4-1 in front of a gate of 2508 on 10 September. The following season Borough got their revenge with a 2 - 0 victory on 9 September in front of 2624 fans. The last time we faced each other at this stage was on 13 Sep 1975 with the game played again at Manor Park. Nuneaton were victors with 1729 in attendance. To find out more about the other ties grab a copy of the match day programme on Saturday and read Dave Clayton’s ‘Look Back’ feature. Just to whet your appetite, one tie in 1970 went to two replays and had a combined attendance of over 14,500 in the three games!

Saturday’s game has a special significance with many of those involved having either played for or managed the opposing team. Three generations of the Belford family will be involved - Dale Belford is a Lambs legend and is the current Assistant Manager at Borough, while son Cam Belford (former Tamworth player) will feature in goal for the visitors. However, Granddad and Dad - Buster, our Kit Man will be cheering on Tamworth loudly hoping to be smiling at 4.45. Borough have a number of players that were wearing the Lambs colours last season - Aman Verma, Joel Kettle and Rhys Sharpe, while Callum Powell was with Tamworth recently and James Clifton featured in some pre-season games for the Lambs. In the Lambs squad Ryan Beswick, Lathaniel Rowe-Turner, Tyrell Waite and Bilal Yafai have all worn the blue of Nuneaton in the past.
