Weekend Blue Square Bet Premier preview by Alan Alger from Blue Square

Weekend Blue Square Bet Premier preview by Alan Alger from Blue Square

We have a reduced programme in the Blue Square Bet Premier this weekend due to six clubs flying the flag for the division in the Second Round of the FA Cup. Unsurprisingly the top three in the table make up half of those still on the road to Wembley, or at least a clash with clubs from the other Premier League in the next round. A five point gap back to fourth placed Newport County means that the top trio will remain unchanged, but Dean Holdsworth's side can close the gap on Saturday with a home win over Hayes & Yeading United. County are the shortest priced match favourites at 2/5 from seven scheduled matches which will be hoping to beat a threatening weather forecast. The home side have settled their form after the blip of three straight defeats including an FA Cup exit at the hands of Crawley. The visitors are looking to reverse a run of six straight defeats and will take to the field one place from the bottom of the table at a price of 13/2 to gain a vital win.

In-form Kidderminster Harriers make the long trip to Barrow looking to build on a seven match unbeaten run. Steve Burr's side can move into the play-off zone with a win at odds of 6/4. That's no foregone conclusion as the form of the home side at Holker Street has already seen them claim the scalps of AFC Wimbledon, Newport County and Rushden & Diamonds. They have also drawn at home to Darlington and Blue Square Bet Premier title favourites Crawley Town. Barrow are also 6/4 to win the game and a draw is priced at 23/10.

Wrexham's recent form has taken them to within touching distance of the play-offs and their home match with Mansfield Town could be classed as a promotion six-pointer. The Red Dragons' defence has been one of the best in the Blue Square Bet Premier for a few months now. The addition of goals at the other end of the pitch has propelled them to seventh place and likewise an opportunity to spend Saturday night in the top five. Dean Saunders' side have failed to score in just two of their twenty league matches so far this season. At the exact same point last year the figure for blanks was eight! Mansfield pulled a victory from the jaws of defeat last Saturday with an eventual 3-2 win over Hayes & Yeading United at home. It was their first game since the departure of manager David Holdsworth and up until the time of writing the Stags remain managerless. Wrexham are Evens favourites to win this match with Mansfield outsiders at 5/2.

Rushden & Diamonds have only found the net once in their last four games and that has contributed to recent form figures of P4 W0 D1 L3. An early red-card in their most recent game at home to York City ended in a shock 4-0 defeat. If the attacking deficiencies have been addressed by manager Justin Edinburgh in training over the last few days then the Diamonds rate as a good bet to win at odds of 6/5 at Forest Green Rovers. The Gloucestershire team have been hard for punters to weigh up as home wins over York and Mansfield were preceded by a 1-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Histon. A home win is offered at 15/8 with a draw priced at 12/5.

Kettering Town sit 14th in the table despite having the division's worst home record. That form has lead to a quote of 10/11 to beat Gateshead at Rockingham Road on Saturday. Gateshead are 13/5 to register what would be their third away win of the season in the league. The North-East side have drawn three games on the spin and are 12/5 to make that four from four here.

All five of Cambridge United's league wins have been achieved against teams in the bottom half of the table. Whilst long-term that may affect their promotion aims it does bode well for this weekend's visit of bottom club Altrincham. United are the 8/15 favourites to extend their unbeaten league run to seven matches. Alty are the second biggest price in the division this weekend at 5/1.

Southport have slumped to 22nd in the table having only gained one point from the last 21 available to them in the league. Away defeats at York and Newport would be no great concern in the grand scheme of things, but a home loss to Bath City when 2-0 up needs to be erased with a good performance as they host Eastbourne Borough this weekend. The Sandgrounders are 11/10 favourites to return to winning ways. Eastbourne are the 2/1 outsiders to get their first league win since early October.
