Blue Square Bet Premier midweek betting preview by Alan Alger from Blue Square
Crawley Town triggered our early title payout on Friday night with a 3-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon. It was their tenth straight home win in the Blue Square Bet Premier and extended their overall run in the league to 19 games without a defeat. Steve Evans' men make the short trip to Eastbourne Borough on Tuesday - one of five games on an important night at both ends of the table. With only two wins in their last 24 league matches, Eastbourne find themselves eight points away from safety in the relegation zone. They would be bottom but for Histon's points deduction, and defeat at home to Barrow on Saturday may have been the final nail in their top-flight coffin. Even at odds of 13/2 not many punters will be tempted by a home win in this fixture, the draw at 10/3 looks just as unlikely. Crawley are the 4/11 favourites to win at Priory Lane but the best bet could be found on our ‘special markets' for the match. We offer 10/11 that the Red Devils win by more than one goal on our ‘match handicap'.
Nearest pursuers Luton Town will be doing their utmost to make us pay out twice on the league and they can start to make us sweat with a win at Rushden & Diamonds. Richard Money will need to pick his players up after their FA Trophy exit at the weekend. The fact that they went to the end of extra-time with just nine-men has led us to go a best price of 7/5 on the possibly tired Hatters. Rushden are on a run of four straight draws and it's 23/10 that they extend it to five. A home win, priced at 8/5, would be a small boost for their play-off hopes - which could rest under the shadow of an off-field Conference charge and subsequent points deduction.
Darlington are celebrating reaching Wembley in the FA Trophy and they catch up one of their games in hand with a home match against Kettering Town. Darlo boss Mark Cooper will relish taking on his former club and after producing another solid defensive display at Gateshead on Saturday the away side will find it hard to get on the scoresheet. Only York City's home defensive record is better than that of The Quakers. The teams drew 0-0 in the early weeks of this season but you could argue that Darlington are much improved since then. They are 4/6 to win this and keep up their slim play-off hopes - and that looks a very good bet. A draw is 5/2 and a win for The Poppies is offered at 7/2.
Grimsby Town are another team playing catch-up on the play-off pack. With only four wins in their last 13 matches (and 2-1 down to Rushden in an abandoned 14th fixture in that time) The Mariners do not look likely to have a say in the top five spots. Building for next season will be a priority at Blundell Park and I like the look of Gateshead at 11/4 to beat them on Tuesday. Ian Bogie's team are performing extremely well in their first season as a professional outfit and were narrowly denied an FA Trophy final appearance at the weekend. They can become the seventh team from the bottom half of the table to return from Grimsby without suffering a defeat. The visitors are 5/6 for the game with a ‘goal start' on our handicap - which covers any draw or Gateshead win.
Even if Histon win the majority of their remaining fixtures it will still be difficult for them to escape relegation. They'll start a home match with Mansfield Town on Tuesday ten points off safety and propping up the whole division. The Stutes are 2/1 to beat the FA Trophy finalists. A Mansfield victory is priced at Evens and a draw is 12/5.
