The Premier League Clubs Local to Tamworth FC

Thursday Jun 18, 2020

Within a 30-mile radius of Tamworth FC’s Lamb Ground, there are currently three teams playing in the Premier League. The contrast between non-league and elite English football is stark, yet it remains right on the doorstep of Lambs supporters.

Tamworth are in the seventh tier of the beautiful game right now, three levels below the EFL. Did you know these Premier League teams are close by?

 Aston Villa

Current Aston Villa manager Dean Smith took his first major coaching role at nearby Walsall when named Head of Youth in 2009. He became the Saddlers’ first-team boss in 2011 and, following a three-year spell at Brentford, returned to the West Midlands in October 2018 with the Villans.

Smith got Villa promoted in the 2019 Championship play-off final just seven months after taking the job. Other experienced bosses had tried and failed to steer the club back into the Premier League over the past couple of campaigns.

Despite continued investment in the squad at Villa Park some 15 miles southwest down the A38 from Tamworth, their first season back in the top flight has been a real struggle. Villa are among the bookmakers’ favourites at 2/5 in the 888 Football betting on relegation and 7/4 to stay up.

Ahead of the Premier League’s return, West Bromwich-born Smith sees his side sit second bottom, but key players like England goalkeeper Tom Heaton and Brazilian striker Wesley are out through injury. Pulling off a great escape looks difficult as Villa try and avoid an immediate Championship return.

 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves have no such worries about their Premier League status. The men from Molineux which is about 25 miles west of the Lamb Ground have been a revelation under inspirational Portuguese boss Nuno Espirito Santo in recent seasons.
Some of the Jose Mourinho magic from The Special One’s time at Porto certainly seems to have rubbed off on former reserve goalie Nuno. With a small squad and backed by Asian investors like Villa, they have massively overachieved at Wolves.

Nuno not only got them promoted in 2018 and kept them up but guided them into the Europa League for this season. That has been a real adventure for Wolves, while they’ve somehow managed to keep themselves in the hunt for another top seven finish and European football again next term.

 Leicester City

Head 27 miles east of Tamworth FC, and you’ll find yourself at the King Power Stadium. This is where Leicester City defied all the odds and lifted the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri back in the miraculous 2015-16 season.

That Cinderella story may be seen as a one-off, but the current crop of Foxes players are no slouches either. Brendan Rodgers left a cushy number coaching Celtic in Scotland to take Leicester on, and his faith in talented young players is really paying off.

The Foxes are in line for a return to Champions League football next season, so long as they maintain their current position in this campaign and make a top four finish. Top-level football really isn’t far away from the Lambs of Tamworth at all.
