Liverpool Stars Dominate Initial Ballon dOr Shortlist

Thursday Oct 24, 2019

Six Liverpool players were named among the first 20 released by France Football for the Ballon d’Or shortlist on Monday following a remarkable campaign that culminated in the Anfield side lifting the Champions League trophy.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are on course to topple Manchester City as Premier League champions this season but were slowed down by Manchester United on Sunday as they were forced to accept a 1-1 draw helped on by a controversial penalty.

With the shortlist for the prestigious Ballon d’Or dropping this Monday, the Reds found themselves with something to be happy about in the wake of the disappointment that saw a 17-game win streak come to an end.

Sadio Mane was the first one of them to be announced and he was joined by teammates Alisson Becker and Georginio Wijnaldum later on. The Champions League holders would also see Virgil van Dijk and Roberto Firmino added. Trent Alexander-Arnold would soon join his five colleagues, rounding off Liverpool’s involvement in the first 20.

Other Premier League players include Man City forward Sergio Aguero and his teammate Bernardo Silva. Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-Min are also on there, while Arsenal hotshot Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been named as well.

Juventus superstar and five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo made it on the list, as was expected, with teammate Matthijs de Ligt joining him, as well as a former Real Madrid teammate in Karim Benzema. Paris Saint-Germain and World Cup-winning forward Kylian Mbappe has made it as well, while Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen also feature.

Poland striker Robert Lewandowski represents German powerhouse Bayern Munich on said list. Ajax stars Dusan Tadic and Donny Van De Beek are representing their club too.

Liverpool are set to continue their Champions League defence this week and will be playing Belgian side Genk in what will be their third group stage fixture on Wednesday. Ladbrokes is offering 2/7 on Klopp’s side 9/2 on a draw and 9/1 on a Genk victory.  The Reds are currently second in Group E after one loss and one win so far, but they’re favoured to come out on top with William Hill, who has 8/13 odds on their chances of finishing first in the group. Leaders Napoli are 3/2 with Skybet, Salzburg are 10/1 with Betfair while Paddy Power have odds of 275/1 going on Genk.

Liverpool are 6/1 to win the Champions League outright with Bet365, with Pep Guardiola’s Man City the favourites at 11/4. Barcelona are also 6/1 with said bookies while PSG are at 8/1.

The Merseysiders will look to get their Premier League quest back on track following their dropped points on the weekend. They will play host to a struggling Spurs side at Anfield in the hopes of making their draw against United a minor blip with a victory over the Londoners.
