AFC Rushden and Diamonds v Tamworth is off but.....

Tuesday Mar 17, 2020

Let's have a look back at some previous encounters between Tamworth and Rushden and Diamonds....

We may not be travelling to play AFC Rushden and Diamonds tonight, but it does not stop us having a look back to previous games. We have played Diamonds in 3 different incarnations - as Rushden Town, Rushden and Diamonds and AFC Rushden and Diamonds.
Our first meeting was played against Rushden Town on 24th September 1983 at the Lamb in the Southern League Midland Division. Tamworth lost 3 - 0 on that day and the second meeting at Rushden in February 1984 is a game to forget as the home team enjoyed an 8 - 0 success! At that stage Rushden Town were playing their games at their Hayden Road ground which the Lambs were to return to once promotion back to the Southern League from the West Midlands League had been achieved in 1988. The complete playing record against Rushden Town was P8 W3 D2 L3 F 11 A20
We next locked horns following Rushden Town’s merger with Irthlingborough Diamonds in the 1992/93 season. Again the game was played in the Southern Midland Division with Tamworth winning 4 -1 on the 10 January 1993 in front of a gate of 1003 at the Lamb. The Diamonds then went on to achieve success at the higher levels of Non league Football and the Football League under the stewardship of Max Griggs, playing in a wonderful stadium at Nene Park. Sadly the success did not last and relegation saw them return to the Conference, in 2006, which is when Tamworth next played them, A 4- 1 defeat at the Lamb was not a great start for Tamworth on 12 September, but on 2 December the Lambs travelled to Nene Park for a game that will probably stand out the most in Tamworth fas memory. The two teams had been drawn to play each other in the second round of the FA Cup. A crowd of 2815 witnessed a great Tamworth 2 -1 win and progress to a 3rd round tie at home to Norwich City which was televised live. You can read the match report here. As everyone knows, Rushden and Diamonds sadly entered administration in 2011 and fans started a phoenix club - AFC Rushden and Diamond. Our complete playing record against Rushden and Diamonds was P11 W2 D4 L5 F 14 A 20.
After working their way through the leagues from the United Counties League Division 1 ,Tamworth met AFC Rushden and Diamonds at the former home of Rushden Town for the first time last season in the newly formed Southern Premier League Central Division. Both league games ended in draws and earlier this season Tamworth won 3-0.
