Young Villains defeated
20 July 2013
Dale Belford welcomed Gordan Cowans' youthful Villa side to The Lamb on a hot and humid afternoon.
Tamworth got the game underway kicking towards the away end and on 5 minutes a right sided cross from Baker was met by the head of Courtney but his near post effort was directed just wide of the post.
(OWN) GOAL: The net rippled at the other end soon after when Capaldi's back pass towards the centre of the goal area was not controlled effectively by Belford and the ball skipped past him into the net (0-1).
The Lambs worked hard and quickly to get back into the match and forced Villa to be on their guard in the final third.
At the other end, Steiber curled a dangerous freekick past the near post on 15 while more Lambs pressure resulted in a corner on 24 and Watkins produced a flying punch to deny a chance from the flag kick.
Belford redeemed the earlier faux-pas on 27 with a superb double save first to deny the downward header from Robinson at the far post and then to block the rebound from Calder after Sellars' initial pin point ball had evaded the Lambs back line.
GOAL: Peniket equalised for The Lambs on 29 slotting the ball home after Richards had pulled it back across from the left of the box (1-1).
Robinson tried his luck from long range on the left wing on 37 and the hard ground saw the resultant bounce take the ball high over Belford and out past the far post.
Regan pt in a fine tackle to deny the quick run forwards of Robinson on 42 after the Villa player had latched onto a double rebound out of the Lambs midfield to beat Rose.
Robinson was again involved in the action as the first half came to a close but his shot was saved by Belford and the rebound came out for Stieber who struck the bar with his dinked effort over the floored keeper and teammate.
Both sides made changes at the break with Dale Belford swapping Lloyd Kerry for Louis Harris and The Villians got the second half underway.
Richards went close in the opening minute, cutting the ball back onto his opposite foot to try and test Watkins, which he did, but fired the rebound wide of the left hand post.
A fine finish from Sellars on 49 gave the Villains the lead once again following a good ball into the box from the left of the area, and the resultant hooked shot over Belford into the far corner was an unstoppable one (1-2)
Robinson showed some great skill to weave through the left channel and forge an opening which, unfortunately for the Villa player, rose over the goal but still earned him a round of applause from the partisan crowd.
Baker finished a fine piece of play down the right wing on 59 with a header on the left of the box which forced sub keeper Seigrist into a one handed save after a pin point ball from Evans had picked out his teammate perfectly but the resultant corner was cleared by the visitors.
After some excellent interplay between Robinson and Calder on the Lambs left side, Jones showed some skill of his own to beat his man down the left and the ball fell to Peniket but he couldn't get a firm shot away at Seigrist.
Harris struck for goal and forced the keeper into a strong save on 71 and from a corner a minute or two later Eckersley powered the ball home at the far post for the equaliser (2-2)
A penalty against Wildin on 76 having been adjudged to have brought down sub Woolery set up Richards from the spot but Seigrist was not going to be beaten and pushed the spot kick away to safety.
A tug on Richards as he tried to break through set up Evans with a dead ball from 35 yards on 79 but his strike curled wide of the left hand post.
The Lambs did take the lead for the first time on 81 though, with Peniket finishing at the right post to make it 3-2 and Woolery tried to make it four with a chip from the edge of the area but his attempt cleared the bar as well as the keeper before the final whistle blew on another good showing from Belford's squad.
