Wright hits 2 in rain soaked friendly
13 July 2009On the second day of their team building trip to Northern Ireland and hidden away on one of the largest housing estates in Europe, Gary Mills' Lambs played to a partisan crowd as they took on Derry City in the inaugural game on the new artificial 3G community pitch at Bishop's Field Sports Centre on Monday night.
With the hosts due to fly out to Latvia for their Europa League tie the following morning, neither side fielded what could would be considered a starting XI in fact Derry fielded their under 18 squad who put up a good show.
Gary Mills had fewer options than his Derry counterpart regarding squad selection due to his smaller squad of which only the injured Dominic Langdon was not available, so it was a case of try a few combinations and see what happenned.
In all the game proved to be a useful workout with Des Lyttle, trialist Josh Apps and even Mills himself getting a run out, but it was left to Nick Wright to take the glory with a goal in each half.
His first has roundly applauded by the home faithful - a great strike from outside the area which gave the keeper no chance and that was all that separated the teams at half time.
By the time his second squirmed in off the far post following a deflection from a Derry defender onto the woodwork there were few left watching from the terracing due to the torrential downpour which sent all but the most fool hardy searching for the cover of the local friendly pub over the road.
In fact, other than the players and management on the Lambs bench we counted just three Lambs fans (including yours truly) braving the weather under a solitary umbrella, while the vast home crowd which had seen the first 45 minutes action were reduced to just a handful as the ground offered little or no cover from the elements.
By the end of the game the downpour had reduced itself to a trickle and despite the rain the match was an enjoyable one to watch.
Att: unk - but the local community turned out in their numbers to support the event, which was preceded by a Derry City Legends charity match.
