Wings win with two in final third

FT: Welling United 2    0 Tamworth

12 October 2013

The Lambs travelled almost to central London for their clash against The Wings, and Dale Belford made one change to his team bringing in Connor Gudger with Mark Wright injured while on the bench, Matt Regan returned from his loan spell at Hednesford. Meanwhile Jack Evans returned to a previous club having featured for Welling in recent seasons.
Tamworth got the game underway kicking away from the Road end of the ground and won an early throw from the right which fell to Elford-Alliyu and although his shot was blocked the pressure was kept on.
In the third minute, Pires cross from the left was headed over the bar by Clarke, but it was a free header and should have been dealt with earlier.
A mix up between Courtney and Belford handed Welling a left sided corner and Clarke was able to get his head on it at the far post but put the ball wide of the mark.
Another couple of half chances fell onto the head of Clarke as the match moved towards the 15 minute mark as Tamworth absorbed the home pressure while some of the travelling faithful brought some noise to proceedings.
Pired then missed a sitter after being sent through by Obersteller, beating the offside and picking up the ball on the edge of the area only to beat Belford but also roll it past the post.
A cracking shot from Elford-Alliyu cannoned back off the cross bar on 24 but Welling went straight down the other end and went close as Franks clipped the top of the bar and the home side won a right sided corner on 27 which came to nothing.
Todd made a strong run into the box on 32 and pulled the ball back past the near post but it was cleared from danger as quickly as it got into the box as the pendulum swung the other way again.
Elford-Alliyu made similarly strong run out of midfield on 34 and set up Kerry to strike from 20 yards forcing Butcher to parry it out for a corner which was cleared.
A freekick fell for The Wings on 36 and Dyer curled the ball over the wall but Belford was happy to see it into his hands, before a quick break set up Kerry to feed Elford-Aliyu and his side footed shot was pushed away by Butcher.
Belford denied Pires left sided strike with a full length save to push it around the far post for a corner on 40 which threatened again, but was cleared from danger.
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half and despite a good ball from Todd for Kerry the referee blew time on the first half action.

The home side restarted proceedings and on 48 Evans denied Healy as she shaped to shoot in the box. From the corner Todd headed the ball strongly behind for a repeat effort from Obersteller but Todd headed away from danger the second time and a foul on Kelly just over the half way line set up Evans with a freekick which he overhit.
Belford then denied Pires what looked an almost certain goal on 52 after the ball hit Richards-Everton and allowed the striker a free shot from 6 yards, but Belford pushed it away with a fine stop.
Elford-Alliyu brought the best out of Butcher in the counter attack with a good shot from the right of the box but Dale Belford was forced to change his personnel on 56 when a crunching tackle by Gallagher meant that Evans was unable to continue and earned the Welling man a booking in the process.
Richards-Everton added another yellow card to his collection following a foul on the Welling right wing and Courtney headed it clear of the box.
With Welling keeping possession Guthrie struck from distance and once again the ball cannoned off the crossbar but Clarke finally found the back of the net with a close range header that looped over Belford on 62.
The Lambs attacked from the restart but Peniket's header over the advancing keeper fell wide of the mark.
Hughes-Mason released Pires on 71 but the forward ran into a Lambs brick wall allowing Tamworth to advance down hill towards the Lambs fans behind the goal and was rewarded with a corner which Capaldi struck and Courtney dive headed but he only managed to put it wide of the mark.
Belford was forced to leave his area to prevent Pires from getting a boot onto the through ball over the top on 73 and a corner was the result which Obersteller put straight into the keeper's hands.
Pires all but made sure of the points for the home side with an 83rd minute strike following Baily Cargill's break down the left wing and pin point cross which Pires finished with ease with a right footed slot pasy Belford from 12 yards. (0-2, 83 mins)
A right sided corner from Capaldi was headed wide of the near post on 88 by Peniket and despite four minutes added time there was no way back for The Lambs.
