Williams puts Lambs through to the next round
29 September 2007
FA Cup fever hit The Lamb with fellow Blue Sq. North side Worcester City visiting the Lamb for the second time in the month.
Lambs boss Gary Mills was forced to make just one change to the side that defeated Workington last Saturday with Craig McAughtrie out through a back injury. His ‘replacement’ came in Adie Smith who took the captains armband for the game.
An early shot from the visitors forced Jose Veiga into a stop on 3 minutes as both sides battled to gain supremacy early on.
Tamworth then won a corner on 5 which was headed back into the danger area by Michael Briscoe but Chris Nurse missed his volley at the far post under pressure.
Gareth Sheldon cut into the box on 8 and his shot was deflected away for another TFC corner. Daniel McDonnell came to collect but missed which took Briscoe unawares and he could only divert the ball behind.
Matt Williams almost latched onto a ball into the area on 14 but McDonnell collected at his feet, and Worcester came back with a floated ball to the far post from the left wing but Partice Leburd missed the chance by a few feet.
After a period of both midfields battling for possession Tamworth showed skill coming forward down the right wing through Athony Robinson and Chris Nurse to force a corner. But from Sheldon’s flag kick Smith’s header was cleared off the line by a combination of two defenders and the keeper.
Williams got a boot onto Nurse’s flick from a Lambs freekick just inside the Worcester half on 29, but Ryan Clarke blocked his effort for another corner which eventually went out for a goal kick.
Adam Webster was released down the right wing on 34 and advanced unmarked on Veiga’s goal. He struck his shot low looking for the far corner but the Lambs ‘keeper got a touch on the ball and sent it skimming past the post for a corner which Veiga collected at the second attempt.
On 39 Dave Bampton did everything but give the Lambs the lead, striking Robinson’s cut back against the far upright from 15 yards out.
Peter Doran had the first chance of the second period with a low shot from the edge of the area on 48 which Veiga dropped to collected easily .
A good cross from Sheldon on the left wing on 50 was headed away by the City defence and Tamworth kept up the pressure with a Sheldon free kick on the right on 52 and when the ball was headed out Williams slammed home the first goal of the afternoon from 18 yards with a driven right footed volley. (1-0)
Worcester, looking for an equalizer, pushed Tamworth back into their own half but the home defence was performing superbly to clear or block most things that came their way, limiting them to a couple of long range efforts.
Wilding tried an overhead kick at goal from 12 yards on 74 which caused Veiga to stretch to collect but Tamworth countered and won a free kick following a foul on Bampton which Sheldon struck but Worcester cleared.
After more Tamworth pressure which saw Robinson and Bampton thwarted by the City defence as they moved forward, The Lamb was filled with the sound of displeasure as Worcester's second sub came on on 76.
With no sign of movement from home bench's substitutes yet, Worcester were forced to make their third substitution of the game on 83 after Peter Doran fell awkwardly for the second time in the game and could not continue.
The visitors then won a free kick in a dangerous position which Graham Ward took and Emeke Nwadike met with his head, but it harmlessly cleared the bar.
Four minutes added time came and despite some late pressure from the visitors The Lambs defended strongly to make it through to the next round.
