Whitman goal extends unbeaten run to 9
09 April 2005
On a difficult pitch and with gale force biting winds, Tamworth and Canvey had their work cut out and rarely did the game come to life. However, a Tris Whitman goal on the hour made certain that the Lambs' run without defeat continued while Canvey added an other game without win to their tally (now 13).
Adie Smith fed the ball to Whitman from the right and he found time to control it and rifle in a shot into the left hand corner.
Ryan Price did well on a number of occasions to thwart the visitors, but the Islanders rarely threatened despite having more shots on target - Jeff Minton and David Theobald being the dangerous players with striker Lee Boylan missing through injury.
"I said to the lads, make sure you don't just turn up today. We all want to go to the end of the season unbeaten and make it 11 without defeat.", said boss Mark Cooper after the game.
"The pitch and wind did not help matters but it was a cracking goal and a deserved victory. We have now got over 50 points (not including the three deducted) which is the most we have got in the Conference and want to keep building. Bob Taylor was flued up and his achillles injury had ruled him out anyway. It was also great to see Dave Robinson back although he played despite not being match fit. We are at the bare bones and realistically only had two fit substitutes. But the mood in the camp is great and I can't praise them enough."
Tamworth: Price, Adie Smith, Bampton (Robinson 84), Redmile, Brown, Simpson, Ebdon, Storer (Francis 71), Morrison, Marcelle, Whitman.
