United do the double over Lambs
21 January 2014Following the Lambs heroics a full seven days previously to put them through to the FA Trophy Quarter Final on February 01, Dale Belford's squad ran out at home to face a tough test against Richard Money's promotion seeking Cambridge United side.
Having had the Alfreton game postponed due to the weather, Belford was able to choose from a fuller squad and made one change to the side that eventually beat Chorley on penalties with Ben Richards-Everton returning from injury as Tony Capaldi sat out..
Tamworth started proceedings in the bottom four, fully aware that the U's ran out three nil winners over The Lambs at the end of August at The Abbey Stadium, and sat four points behind and two games in hand over leaders Luton as both sides ran out.
Cambridge made a late change to the published teamsheet as Sullivan was replaced by Norris shortly before Tamworth got the game underway kicking towards the Meadow Street End and in the second minute Donaldson crossed from the left and the ball was headed behind for a corner on the right which Hildreth had to hook behind for another flag kick on the same side but a foul halted play.
A slip on the half way allowed the visitors a run on goal, but Dunk lost his footing in the box and The Lambs cleared.
Then on 13 Haworth found space on the left and his cross was met by the head of Peniket past the far post but he glanced his header wide of the mark.
As the game reached the 20 minute mark, neither side really had any control or built up sufficient steam to power at the opposition.
A left sided U's corner on 27 was flicked past the past post by Donaldson while at the other end Mahon struck right footed from the edge of the box but his shot powered into the United defence.
A Kerry strike from the right of the box forced Norris to catch at height on the half hour and a mix up at the back nearly let the Cambridge forwards in before the ball was booted clear.
Richards-Everton picked up a yellow card for a challenge on Dunk and Donaldson fired the dead ball from the right wing but Belford tipped the flicked header from Coulson over the bar.
Peniket tried his luck on the turn from 20 yards on 42 but missed the corner of the target by a whisker, although Norris was appeared untroubled by the shot.
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half which ended without further incident.
Cambridge restarted proceedings and Hughes picked up an early booking for a foul on Peniket that allowed Evans to fire a freekick at goal from 25 yards but his shot lifted up and kept rising high over the bar.
A corner was forthcoming for the visitors on 51 and caused the travelling fans to burst into song as Belford punched the ball clear before Mahon headed behind on the opposite side for another and Richards-Everton denied Elliott a far post header.
Hildreth picked up a booking on 54 for a foul on Dunk and on 57 and on the hour Hughes hit a low shot at goal but it was very easy for Belford to collect as the drizzly rain came down.
Belford then denied Barnes-Homer with a low stop in the area and the rebound was blocked by Mahon.
A debated foul by Hildreth shortly after set up the visitors with a dead ball from 25 yards out in a central position and Hughes powered home into the far left corner to give United the lead (0-1, 64 mins)
Waldon came on for his debut, for Hildreth, after the goal.
Former Lamb Tait came on after Dunk went down twice in as many minutes, almost requesting he be taken off the field and with nearly all the subs having been used play was able to continue.
Arnold fed Berry on 75 but his shot from the edge of the box took a deflection and Belford was able to take the ball, then at the other end Todd crossed for Chadwick but the latter's header went high over the target.
The Lambs escaped a quick break over the half way line on 78 when Elliott's pass to Arnold saw the latter advance too quickly and his run was denied by the offside flag.
Kerry was booked for a culmination of fouls on 81 and a handball against United then set up Peniket from 25 yards to the left of centre but his freekick hit the wall and Kerry's follow up shot curled over the target from 18 yards.
Arnold was booked for diving over the legs of Evans on 85 and Taylor picked up one too on 87 for a mistimed challenge on Waldon. Evans planted the dead ball into the box from the right corner but it was headed away from danger before being fired back in and it fell to Chadwick past the right post but he fired it into the side netting
Four minutes added time were shown at the end of the game with ended without further incident.
