Unbeaten runs continue

FT: Tamworth 1    1 Stockport County

05 March 2016

After the previous weekend’s victory over league leaders Solihull, Tamworth welcomed the team with the best (current) away record to The Lamb. Stockport hadn’t conceded in four games and won the last three of their league games.
Andy Morrell made one change to the starting eleven from the Moors victory with Steve Tomassen unavailable, new signing Ashley Carter came in at the back. The other three new faces in the squad all took a place on the bench alongside Lee Smith.

After winning the toss, captain Green elected to kick ‘downhill’ in the first half towards the Castle End as the visitors kicked off.
And there was an early chance at the away end from a throw on the left which was headed across the face of goal but not finished by the County forward line.
On 6 Strong unleashed a trademark curler from the left and Ormson did well to tip it over for a corner which was headed behind for one on the opposite side by the clubhouse which came to nothing.
Taylor crossed from the left on 9 and O’Hanlon stopped to head it behind for a corner by the clubhouse which was headed on for another by the road gate and Durrell forced O’Hanlon to head it behind for a repeat attempt which caused a few problems but eventually fell back to Ormson.
Brodie was caught off side from the flicked header of Odejayi on 19 but had found a gap in the back to exploit and tried a shot from 30 yards anyway, which Belshaw was happy to catch. County forced a corner on 20 which Belshaw caught under pressure in the centre of the six yard box then on 22 Brodie fell under the attentions of Carter and the referee was having none of his appeals for a penalty.
O’Hanlon gave a left sided corner away with a misplaced backpass from distance on 24 which Durrell put into the area and received back but his return cross was taken by the keeper.
Ledsham received a talking to for disputing the referee’s decision on 26 while Brodie responded to the crowd in the main stand with unnecessary hand gestures.
Another County corner from the right on 27 was taken at height by Belshaw, and when Preston and Odejayi fell under the same tackle on 28 the referee waved away appeals for another penalty.
County players questioned the decision again and this caused the ref to request a meeting with the Stockport captain to discuss his teammates attitude to the officials.
It was 1-0 to County on 31 though, through Marsden after Belshaw's punch from a long throw from the shed side of the ground was not cleared and he finished on the angle at the far post. (0-1, 31 mins).
Brodie headed a right sided corner back into the danger area on 36 and Belshaw took it well, then released Burns in right back who started a good move that ended when it skipped away from Strong down the left wing.
Green forced a corner on the right on 39 and it was headed behind past the far post for another, which Durrell had two bites at but the County defence were able to clear their lines before Newton could get a set up touch on the ball in the D.
Taylor was brought down inside the County half on 45, and Durrell set up the deadball in the left channel. The kick was headed down by Newton but found Preston offside so play halted as one minute added time was shown at the end of the first half.

HT: Tamworth 0    1 Stockport County

The Lambs restarted proceedings and after initially letting play to continue for some time, Field was booked on 50 for a tackle on Taylor.
Newton was able to get a shot away on 55 from 20 yards but it was tame and easy for Ormson to smother as the home side continued to try and make headway.
Durrell was booked for a challenge on the half way line on 56 and from the County freekick, Marsden looked to double his tally, but his shot from 20 yards was deflected and forced Belshaw to make a save on 57.
The Lambs were level on 61 through Durrell’s low strike from the edge of the area which squeezed past Ormson inside the right hand upright (1-1, 61 mins) and then on 63 Dyer struck the corner of bar of post with a right footed effort from the right of the box before Belshaw parried a Brodie shot following a County corner at the other end.
Durrell floated a freekick into the area and with the sun in the keeper’s eyes, looked to catch Ormson off guard but he took it routinely.
Newton dragged his shot just wide of the far post after battling his way into the area on 71 and Mohamed came on for his debut for Dyer on 76 and Smith came on for Preston a minute later.
Newton threaded the ball through to Mohamed on 80 but his shot was deflected back to Ormson. Green’s push on Odeyadi gave County a freekick on the half way line on 87 and Morton got his head onto it on the right of the box and it floated over Belshaw and the bar.
A 90th minute corner from Durrell was headed away but he got it back and forced another which was flicked away from danger to Taylor whose deep cross was headed away for another flagkick which came to nothing.
Tamworth put the pressure on in the final moment of the game, including a corner forced from a Durrell shot and a Mohamed strike that went just wide before the five minutes added time ended all square.
