Trinity take the final three with three

FT: Gainsborough Trinity 3    0 Tamworth

28 April 2018

Mike Fowler took his Lambs side to Northolme knowing that there was essentially nothing riding on the tie.
A possible financial or similar failure of other clubs in the league may give the third from bottom club a straw to clutch at to stave of relegation, so without wanting to quote the cliché too early, they players were really just playing for pride.

With light rain coming down Tamworth got the game underway attacking the covered, clubhouse end of the ground.
Early signs showed intent to get towards the goal of Ravas but on 4 it was the home side who took the lead. After picking up a throw on the right the ball came into the area and was only half cleared, falling to Walker 6 yards out after an assist from Simmons and he stabbed it diagonally past Jezeph (0-1, 4 mins)
An overhit lobbed back pass by Jones on 8 nearly beat Jezeph but it bounced a yard wide of the far post and Gainsborough’s corner was cleared. Donohue forced a corner off his covering defender on 10 but nothing came of Knights flagkick.
On 21 King spotted an opening but could only find the post from 18 yards.
The rebound fell to Walker and he forced a good stop from Jezeph but the keeper could only parry and Worsfold blasted the loose ball over.
A threaded ball from Taylor to Donohue on the half hour resulted in a good cross but no goal scoring chance, and the home side doubled their advantage on 32.
A lofted through ball drew Jezeph a mile out of his area and allowed Worsfold to burst through, knock it past the keeper and then into the path of Jarman who still had a bit to do, but he chipped it into the top left bin to make it 0-2 (32).
Walker beat his man down the left and squared it for Jarman on 36 but he made a hash of the relatively simple finish and The Lambs survived.
Worsfold struck low shortly afterwards and forced Jezeph into a good parried stop as Gainsborough continued to search for a third goal which probably couldn’t have been argued against.
Added time at the end of the first half couldn’t come soon enough for the travelling faithful and in the two minutes a deep cross was headed behind away from Asante for a corner.
The flagkick came back to Knights but Verma’s knock down couldn’t be scrambled in by Taylor.

HT: Gainsborough Trinity 2    0 Tamworth

Taylor was replaced by Tom Shaw before the home side restarted proceedings and on 48 Stainfield curled a driven effort just over the target with Jezeph in full flight.
Verma took a knock to his forehead and drew blood leaving The Lambs a man short for a while.
Worsfold beat Sharpe but found Burns in his way on 53 as the Trinity man struck low for goal, and Knights should have made it 2-1 but his shot from inside the area curled past the far post on 55.
But it was 3-0 to Gainsborough on 58 when Jarman drove the ball low past the flat footed Jezeph after good work on the right by Simmons and Worsfold down the right made its way across to the home captain to double his tally.
Walters doubled the Lambs U21 contingent on the field on 61 replacing Donohue, and his teammate Charlie Shaw struck for goal on 64 but lifted the shot over the target from 25 yards.
At the other end Jezeph did very well to push King’s 20 yard strike over the bar. Verma needed further treatment on his cut, so Reid replaced him with 20 to play and nearly pulled a goal back with his first touch, but was unable to squeeze hi shot from inside the box past Ravas.
A deadball skipped through past Jezeph with Stainfield closing him down quickly, but it went out past the keeper’s right hand post. Walters was putting a good shift in in midfield and forced a corner with a deflected shot on 84.
King forced Jezeph to protect his goal from a low angled shot from the left of the area which he followed up with an easy-to-gather chip towards the keeper on 84.
Walters forced Ravas into another blocked saved on 88 and Knights hit a shot from 25 yards wide of the mark on 89. Hinchliffe went through one on one with Jezeph on 90 and the keeper forced him wide of the mark, as three minutes added time was shown.
Walters had half an appeal for a penalty in added time and forced a corner instead which fell to Sharpe and it looked like it was going in but Ravas pulled off a smart save to deny him.
