Trawlermen end play-off hopes with final kick
23 April 2016For the final home league game of the season, Andy Morrell made no changes to the starting eleven that defeated high flying Fylde the previous weekend. A play off place was still a possibility prior to kick off, and possibly could still be going into the final game of the season away at struggling Brackley Town but similarly struggling Lowestoft stood in their way of a penultimate three points in front of a bumper crowd, swelled by the presence of players, managers and parents of clubs in the Tamworth Junior Football League.
The Lambs got the game underway, attacking the Meadow Street End in the first half and took the action to the visitors.
A deep freekick from the left from Lowestoft was met by the head of Ryan Jarvis on 11 but it rebounded of Carter and a quick break through the middle saw Newton burst into the box on the left of the D on 12 but his shot went a whisker wide.
After Taylor’s initial strike had been batted away by Jessup in the Lowestoft goal Lee Smith's follow up at the far post was denied by the keeper to keep it goalless on 14.
Belshaw made a good save down to his left on 25 to deny a low strike from Chris Henderson and the resulting corner was headed away.
A superb cross field ball by Strong into the path of Dyer nearly saw his take the ball past Jessup on the half hour, but he was unable to make the decisive touch and the keeper smothered the half chance.
Burns cross from the right wing was met by the head of Newton at the far post on 31 but Jessup was well placed to take the effort in both hands and Jessup stopped Newton’s drive towards the left hand (near) post on 35 with his feet to keep the scoreline barren.
A foul 25 yards from goal set up Mohamed with a dead ball strike in the left channel on 43 and his strike went up and dipped down into the left of the goal, beating Jessup to give The Lambs the lead and his third strike in three. (1-0, 43 mins)
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half which ended without further incident.
The Trawlermen got the game back underway, with The Lambs now kicking downhill for possibly the last time and the visitors were awarded freekick on the right of midfield around 30 yards from goal on 47 which was defended away from danger.
Newton struck across the face of goal on 51 and The Lambs enjoyed much of the possession as the minutes ticked by.
Belshaw raced out of his area on 58 and took the ball out of play but Henderson complained to the referee about what he thought was handball and earned himself a booking in the process and Strong was booked on 62 for a niggly challenge near the half way line.
A deep corner on 65 was met by Newton at the far post but he couldn’t direct either bite of the cherry on target.
Smith's header from Deeney's freekick on the left found the back of the net but the offside flag ruled it out quickly on 71, and the Lambs were forced to play with ten men for a period of time when Burns was clattered into the main stand wall by Henderson and needed attention to a split lip.
He was brought down again on 76, this time in the center of the Lambs defence following a high boot from the same player.
Newton capitalised on a free ball down the left on 80 and forced a corner which Smith headed wide of the far post, but he was brought down on 88 by Jarvis and required treatment while the referee handed out cards to both Jarvis’.
The amount of added time was not shown until over a minute into stoppage the period and Lowestoft were awarded a freekick following a clumsy challenge 25 yards out in the right channel and Smith fired home into the far corner to stun The Lamb into silence (1-1, 90+4 mins)
