Three excellent points at Kingfield
17 February 2007
Gary Mills' Lambs made the journey to the Kingfield looking for a win to keep themselves in with a shout among the bottom four and also hoping for their first double of the season after defeating Woking at The Lamb earlier in the season 3-1 – their last home league win back in November 2006. Previous visits to Kingfield had not been good for Tamworth with 4-0, 2-1 and 5-0 reversals being suffered at the hands of The Cards.
On the team front there were no changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Southport last weekend but both Dave Bampton and Micky Tuohy came onto the bench after playing at Rushall on Tuesday night following a long lay off with injury.
Tamworth should have taken the lead on 7 when Jake Edwards burst through unhindered on goal, but James Bittner threw himself at the ball as Edwards tried to chip the ball over the advancing keeper and the chance went begging.
Taiwo Atieno scuffed a shot wide of the mark from the edge of the area on 11 as Tamworth kept up the pressure but Guiseppe Sole tried a flying volley after the Lambs failed to clear and Woking won a corner on 13.
Atieno’s persistence against Curtis Osanu forced a corner on 15 but the ball was eventually cleared by the home defence.
Atieno forced a great save from Bittner on 22 after cutting in the left of the area and unleashing a left footed strike. The ball bounced high into the danger area from the Woking ‘keeper’s save but Edwards was unable to capitalise.
A good move out of midfield by Sole released Craig McAllister down the left shortly after but his cross was easy for Veiga to take at full stretch.
John McGrath then conceded a freekick on the right following a foul on Goma Lambu on 28 and although the ball skimmed through the crowd of players, Veiga saved easily low to his right.
Although Woking looked perhaps the more comfortable on the ball, Tamworth were doing more than enough to frustrate their hosts and a slow handclap emanated from the home fans with just over half an hour gone - showing the Cards supporters frustration at the efforts of their side.
Rikki Bains headed a free kick well enough but saw his effort go over the Woking crossbar on 36 and Atieno forced another good save with another left footed strike from the left of the area 30 seconds later as Tamworth pushed forward again.
Kyle Storer tried his luck from distance on 41 but it was easy for Bittner and Woking burst forward but failed to make it count despite some well worked play from Lambu and Sole before the half time whistle blew.
Inside the first minute of the second period Jamie Taylor was tripped on the edge of the area and won his side a freekick 20 yards out but the ball was drilled straight in to the Lambs' wall and cleared.
Woking kept up the early second half pressure by winning a corner on 49 which Veiga took well once again.
But it was Edwards who finished easily from 16 yards after 51 after a long ball was flicked on by Edwards to Atieno who set up his striking partner and he finished the move with great right footed placed shot into the far corner. (1-0)
Matt Williams grazed the top of the crossbar after a superb move from the left wing which ended with a sweet turn and shot by Williams.
It was then Woking’s turn to hit the woodwork when Taylor struck the upright with a well placed header from Osanu’s right wing cross on 57.
Atieno unleashed a right footed drive from 18 yards on 59 only to see it deflected away for a corner but an infringement in the area denied Heslop a shooting chance from the flag kick.
Williams shot agonisingly wide on 70 after another quality move out of midfield by The Lambs and another corner came on 72 after Atieno and Edwards had combined well but the flag kick came to nothing.
With 10 to go Woking looked dangerous and forced another corner in a bid to get back into the game but Ollie Berquez and Sole both saw their shots deflected away.
But it was 2-0 and game over for Woking on 82 when Lambs' substitute Steve Burton perfectly hooked the ball over his head on the halfway line for Simon Heslop to run onto and round Bittner before sliding the chance home from the right of the six yard area. (2-0)
