Thornton makes a point

FT: Worcester City 1    1 Tamworth

23 August 2014At Kidderminster Harrier’s Aggborough ground, The Lambs were looking for a return to form after last minute disappointment against Stockport and Dale Belford brought Jon Adams and Kevin Thornton into the starting eleven with Brendon Daniels and Leon Mettam taking their places on the bench.
Former Lambs Nick Wright and Wayne Thomas started for Worcester while former keeper Jose Veiga on the bench for City. City kicked off attacking the away end, populated by 100 or so travelling Lambs.
On 2 Hibbert tried to get the ball down the left wing and a hand ball set up Thornton with a freekick which was met well by the head of Clarke but went over the bar. Hildreth met a ball into the right of the box with a left footed half volley on 12 and it whistled just past the far post.
After riding some pressure from the home side a fine ball from Sleath nearly found Hildreth on the right wing but Vaughan left his area and booted it away from danger. Another corner for City was the result of a persistent attack on 17, but Thomas headed the chance well wide to the delight of the Lambs fans. A bumbled save from Vaughan off Hibbert's strike saw Clarke follow up but a deflection took it past the post on 29 mins, but then within a minute Worcester took the lead when Symons header the left of the box from a Weir cross bounced down past Vaughan and into the roof of the net (0-1).
A Wright cross from the right on 34 was punched away by Belshaw and the intermittent rain showers over Kidderminster continued to make things difficult.
Jackson’s long range effort was punched behind for a corner on 39 but it only saw the home side break and force The Lambs to rebuild. Thornton found Purdie in the box with a neat dead ball on 43 but the latter’s header across the box was just out of the reach of Hibbert’s lunge and two minutes added time were played out before the whistle blew.

HT: Worcester City 1    0 Tamworth

The Lambs got the second half underway but there was little to report in the way of action until the 52nd minute when a freekick on the left by Jackman was headed over the bar via a deflection and the same player fired in the left sided corner but it was too long and Worcester had to fire it back into the mix.
Deeney looped a header towards the line and Belshaw punched it clear and Nti’s follow up shot was headed clear by Green.
Then on 55 Thornton made space in the box to turn and fire low into the bottom right and corner to equalise (1-1, 55 mins) Hildreth drilled a low ball towards the same bottom corner on 60 but it was blocked en-route and at the other end Weir hit a long range effort that Belshaw was happy to watch the ball go over the corner of bar and post.
Belshaw pushed a point blank header over the bar from Hutchinson on 71 and Hibbert rolled a shot from the right of the box wide of the left hand upright on 74.
There was another great stop from Belshaw on 80 to deny Nti's freekick and Green swept away the follow up as the home side continue to press a little more than The Lambs.
Green picked up the third yellow card for The Lambs on 83 after a trip outside the area but the dead ball was lacking.
Thornton cut the ball back from the left and Hibbert pounced but saw his shot deflected over the bar on 88 and four minutes added time was shown at the end of the game.
Thornton forced a corner in the final seconds and the ball bounced out for another on the opposite side but there was no last second winner for Tamworth and both sides took a point away from the game.
