Ten men Lambs Iron out a point
02 November 2013Lambs boss Dale Belford made one change to the starting XI to face 5th placed Braintree Town, swapping one full back for another as Matt Regan made way for Ben Richards-Everton who had come on as a substitute in the FA Cup victory over Solihull Moors the previous Saturday.
New loan signing Gillingham midfielder Charlie Allen took a place on the bench, as Alan Devonshire's visiting Iron's squad, featuring a couple of ex-Lambs in Sam Habergham and Chez Isaac, looked to keep the pressure in the top echelons of the table ahead of FA Cup 1st Round weekend when both sides face League 2 opposition as The Lambs welcome Cheltenham and Braintree face Newport.
Lambs captain Duane Courtney, making his 100th appearance, got the formalities out of the way and The Iron kicked off proceedings with Tamworth attacking the Meadow Street end.
A long Capaldi throw from the left got caught in the wind and fell for Chadwick but a handball was spotted and play stopped.
Then, as Braintree broke down by the clubhouse, Keane pulled back the visiting wingman and left sided freekick from captain Davis earned a corner on the right which then fell back to the same man, but his side footed effort curled wide of the left hand post.
Capaldi fired a long frekick from the half way line on 6 and once again the wind caught the ball high and moved it around as it headed to the box, but keeper Hamman collected it quite easily.
The Lambs were working hard and looking strong in most areas of the park as the game his 15 minutes as Hamman collected a ball from the right which looked more dangerous than it perhaps was and Hildreth tried a shot from the edge of the area but cleared the bar by some distance.
Matt Paine picked up a booking for the visitors on 21 and Morgan fell to the floor after a boot followed through inside the Braintree half on 25 but play couldn't be stopped initially and it took a foul a minute or so later for him to receive treatment.
Morgan couldn't continue and was replaced by Allen on 33 and from a couple of right side freekick Tamworth were able to camp out in the final third, but despite pressure on the keeper and a game of head tennis, a foul by Hildreth gave the visitors respite from a freekick.
Allen put in a low sliding challenge in on Isaac on 41 and after much deliberation and discussion, the referee decided it was a red card offence and reduced the home side to ten men.
The reduced sized team continued to work up to the break and Hildreth looked for a long range opening on 45 as four minutes added time was shown at the end of the half.
The Lambs got the second half underway but not before Todd replaced Elford-Alliyu and with the wind getting stronger by the minute the ability of the players to put the ball higher than head height continued to be a problem.
Peniket forced a corner by the clubhouse on 54 and it forced the Iron defence to clear their lines and the same player was booked for a foul on Peters in front of The Shed that left the Braintree man requiring treatment.
Braintree's Holman beat Richards-Everton for pace and struck past Belford on 69 but his shot cannoned back off the underside of the bar ad play quickly switched to the other end but Todd was unable to get his shot away cleanly from the left of the area.
Hildreth picked up a booking when he ran past the opposition midfield and caught his arm around the player, but quickly held his hands up in a show of accidental contact that carried no weight with the referee.
Todd stuck a half volley eight yards form goal on 80 but it bounced up and over the bar and on 84 substitute Daley struck a right footed shot from 25 yards over the bar.
Davis then struck a powerful shot from the edge of the area and Belford tipped it over or a left sided corner which came to nothing and as four minutes added time was shown, Richards came off to be replaced by Wright and despite some late pressure from the visitors a both sides left with a point.
