Table topping Ammies defeat Tammies

FT: Tamworth 1    2 Salford City

11 November 2017

Andy Morrell’s squad welcomed Salford to the EST Electrical Services Tamworth stadium and he made two changes to the side that had taken four points from six on their travels. Verma and Lane came back into the side after injury replacing Upton and Taylor.

After an impeccably observed minutes silence at The Lamb, the table topping Ammies got the game under way, attacking the Castle End in the first half.
Knights almost made an early breakthrough though, striking the top of the cross bar with a drive from 25 yards which probably would have beaten Burton.
On 10, Verma sent Knights free in the area on the left of the box and his ball across the six yard box was inches away from a simple finish but Salford escaped.
Knights squared the ball on the edge of the area for Deeney to strike and he tried to place it into the bottom right corner, but it went wide of the mark and wouldn’t have troubled Burton.
On 23 the first real chance for City came as Shelton struck from 18 yards, wide of the mark via a deflection for a corner which came to nothing.
Then on 26 Verma announced his return with a downward header from six yards out into the bottom left corner from a pinpoint cross from Fox on the left of the area. (1-0)
A corner from Knights was punched over the target by Burton on 28 but the resulting flag kick was long and went out for a throw. The lead lasted only 4 minutes though as a freekick was awarded and Shelton struck it straight and true through the wall and past Rowley from fully 30 yards (1-1)
After a period of Salford possession The Lambs tried to turn the screw and forced a corner on the left which caused some problems for the defenders in the box but was eventually cleared over the half way line.
Rowley held onto a close range angled header from Phenix on 40 and Redshaw, possibly the smallest player on the pitch, somehow got to a header six yards out but put his effort over the bar on 42.
At the other end of the pitch Deeney hit a hopeful strike over the target from 25 yards on 43 and Coulson was booked for a bump challenge on the half way line on 45 shortly before the whistle blew for the break.

HT: Tamworth 1    1 Salford City

Tamworth restarted proceedings but Redhsaw went on an early foray forwards only to be denied by Coulson.
Phenix made a darting run through the Lambs left back position on 50 but he was closed down quickly by Rowley and the danger was booted away and Nottingham unleashed a powerful drive from the right channel on 54 which saw Rowley at full stretch as it whistled wide of the right hand post.
And when it seemed like City were starting to exert pressure, Tamworth countered but Piergianni headed the danger away from Styche and then a corner was cleared through to Phenix who shot from distance, an easy stop for Rowley.
Verma was struggling for a few minutes as so was replaced by Taylor on 65, then on 67 Deeney made a surging run through the Salford back line but his final cut back ball was taken easily by Burton.
From a corner on the left on 72 Phenix stole in at the near post to glance a header home in at the far post to give Salford the lead (1-2) and this prompted a double attacking substitution by The Lambs and Salford also made a double change on 78.
The visitors continued to press and forced a corner on 83 but Tamworth continued to defend strongly while creating positive attacking play was proving more difficult.
However, on 86 Powell found space and sent a teasing cross into the box for Reid to meet with a header that he couldn’t direct under the bar.
At the other end Rowley parried a low first time effort from Shelton and five minutes added time was shown at the end of the second half.
Time ran down as City sub Maynard had to be helped from the pitch after going down with an injury and despite the additional time the visitors added to their top of the table tally.
