Storer gives Lambs reasons to cheer

FT: Tamworth 1    4 Norwich City

06 January 2007

The Lamb was buzzing as the teams warmed up ahead of the FA Cup Third Round clash between Tamworth and Norwich City of The Championship and boss Mark Cooper stayed true to the side that had drawn with Rushden and Diamonds on New Years day as Adrian Chiles, Terry Dixon and Ian Dowie overlooked proceedings from the BBC commentary box situated over the away terracing as the drizzly rain welcomed the fans to the ground.

Both sides found it hard to settle on the rain soaked pitch as Darryl Taylor and John McGrath both tried shots and crosses but both went wayward until the 5th minute when McGrath forced Gallacher into a save in the top right corner and then saw his shot deflect over for the first corner of the game which came to nothing.
Adie Smith denied a runs from Robbie Earnshaw and Darren Huckerby.as the Canaries won a corner in the 8th minute which Smith headed away at the near post.
The Lambs broke and Taylor fed Helsop who shot over and then on 9 Heslop fed Burton who watched in agony as the ball rolled past the far post.
On 12 Huckerby cross from the left for Earnshaw but he put his shot well wide of the mark when perhaps he should have done better.
Gary Docherty headed across goal on 15 for Dickson Etuhu to try a tame headed at Jose Veiga and a minute later Lee Croft struck from distance on the right wing but it was an easy chance for the Lambs keeper.
After a number of challenges on McGrath went unpunished other than The Lambs winning a free kick Simon Weaver was penalized for pulling back Earnshaw and picked up the first card of the game on 20 minutes.
On 26 McGrath picked up a yellow card for a high boot against Youssef Safri and had the referee nbot been as forgiving may well have sent off the Lambs playmaker.
Williams snuck in and almost forced the ball into the net on 29 when Gallacher and two defenders went for the same ball just inside the area but his shot rolled wide of the mark.

Etuhu shot over Veiga’s bar when the ball came to him from a Norwich corner and a freekick for the visitors was taken easily by the Lambs custodian on 32.
It was a long time coming as Norwich had rarely threatened but a diving header from Dion Dublin gave his side the lead on 40 minutes. Huckerby’s low cross evaded the Lambs defence and Dublin threw himself at the ball at the near post to beat Veiga to make it 1-0
And on 43 it was 2-0 to the Canaries when Huckerby struck low with a right footed shot from close range after Dublin returned the favour with a ball to his feet in the area.

HT: 0-2

The Lambs had a proverbial mountain to climb as the second half kicked off and won a corner on 49 after some good forward play but Smith couldn’t keep his header down.
However, in the 51st minute the Lambs defence capitulated and Darren Huckerby almost passed the ball into the net from just inside the area from Croft’s through ball. (0-3)
Steve Burton made way for Taiwo Atieno on 56 as Cooper looked for at least a goal in front of the TV cameras but it was Dublin on 62 who bagged his second and Norwich’s fourth goal of the game. Tom Kemp mis-hit his clearance and Dublin was on hand to lift the ball over a helpless Veiga, before being substituted shortly after. (0-4)
Kyle Storer made a name form himself in the FA Cup for the second season running by slamming home a 25 yard pile driver on 68. McGrath laid the ball back to Storer who, on the right of the area unleashed a right foot shot which nestled in the far corner and raised the roof off The Lamb. (1-4)
Lambs debutant substitute Jamie Price placed a tame header at Gallagher on 75 and Storer thought he would try and repeat his earlier goalscoring feat on 76 with a shot from outside the box but his effort went wide left.
With the result almost certain both sides settled into thoughtful play and put on a great advert for FA Cup football strengthened by the vociferous support from both sets of fans.
