Steelmen give Lambs a test

FT: Corby Town 2    2 Tamworth

31 July 2019

The Lambs travelled to Steel Park for a rare Wednesday night fixture in their penultimate friendly of the pre-season 2019-20 warm up against their Southern League Division One Central hosts who nearly earned promotion to the Lambs league last season.
With an almost settled squad in place the Tamworth trio of Smith, Danylyszyn and Baillie were able to make further fine tuning to the side as the opening game of the season came closer into view. The Steelmen got the game underway and gave Tamworth the lead on 4 when Waite’s low ball into the left hand post area was diverted past his own keeper by the covering Corby defender, Burgess (1-0, 4 mins)
Ireland snick past the Lambs right back / centre back position on 9 and fired past the right hand post on 8 in a rare defensive mix up by Tamworth.
Gough whipped in a cross from the left on 10 after great work from Hoenes out of midfield, and Waite picked up the ball in the next move but George was equal to his long range strike.
A foul on the advancing Fry saw play pulled back on 13 and Beswick lined it up 40 yards out and launched it into the box for Magunda to head it back in, but Corby cleared their lines. When the ball dropped.
Trialist threaded the ball down the right to Hoenes but George was quick out to smother the ball and the home side broke ending the move with a powerful shot from Ireland which rose and cleared the bar.
An innocuous challenge on Magunda in the right back area of the pitch on 21 saw the player go down and require treatment on the field and was replaced by Shaw on 23.
James forced a flagkick after a tricky workout in the right corner of the pitch on 30. Beswick sent the corner long, Waite picked up the ball and sent a teasing cross into the six yard box for Fry to glance past the keeper (2-0, 31 mins)
A superb ball into the box from Trialist on 39 from the left wing was met by Waite but he couldn’t keep it down and Corby escape conceding a third.
Crawford smashed the ball into the left side netting on 42 as the home side made a surge forwards and Singh was happy to let it go out with attempting a save.
Corby forced a corner at the end of the half and from the right sided flagkick Ling headed down and past Singh to make it 2-1 at the break.

HT: Corby Town 1    2 Tamworth

Tamworth restarted proceedings under the floodlights and went on the attack but it was Ireland who had the first chance, curling a shot from the left of the box just over the right hand corner of bar and post.
Corby forced a left sided corner on 52 when Singh and Rowe-Turner failed to clear the ball and Burgess picked up the ball at the edge of the box before firing wide of the mark.
Burgess then picked up a card for a tackle on James on 54 and he was replaced by Creaney shortly afterwards.
Hoenes danced his way into the box on 58 and cross but Waite couldn’t make a telling contact and then Creaney nearly connected with a left sided ball from Trialist on 59.
Shaw was unable to continue on 67 so was replaced at right back by Ambris.
Corby turned up the heat a little from this point and exerted themselves more in the middle of the park but Corby had to work equally as hard to thwart a flowing move forwards from The Lambs resulting in Waite’s final touch, which was cleared.
Beswick needed a visit from the physio on 72 and was replaced by Clement on 74 and Reid replaced Hoenes.
Corby equalised on 76 via Diggin who mopped up the loose ball after Singh had superbly parried a close range volley from Crawford. (2-2, 76 mins)
Waite hit a low shot which curled wide of the left post on 80, and at the other end Crawford repeated the move on 85.
The Lambs forced a corner on the right on 86 but it went long and out for a goalkick on the far side and time ran down leaving The Lambs just 90 playing minutes away from the start of the season.
