Spartans attack and take the points

FT: Tamworth 0    3 Blyth Spartans

13 February 2018

After the cruel 2-1 reversal at Alfreton in his first game in charge at the weekend, Mike Fowler made two changes to the starting eleven with Callum Powell and new signing Jack Thomas, in on loan from Mansfield coming in for Connor Taylor and Sam Coulson.

Blyth got the game underway and inside the second minute Powell spotted Jameson off his line and hit a shot from 265 yards which dipped onto the top of the bar and the rebound found Asante in an offside position.
Maguire was caught offside form a threaded pass on 9 and he beat Stevens and struck the left hand post but it wouldn’t have counted anyway.
Following a foul on Asante midway into the Blyth half on 10 Kinghts ball into the box whipped past everyone and out for a goalkick, but the intention to get forwards at every opportunity was blatant for all the fans braving cold on the terraces.
Maguire fired a low shot from the left of the box the wrong side of the left hand upright on 12 and a trip / slip in front of the Lambs D set up Spartans with a freekick on 14 which Hopson drilled into the chest of Sharpe.
Dale twisted and turned and crossed for Reid to head at goal but he mistimed it and it skimmed past he far post. Rivers drilled a host past the right hand post after beating two defenders on 16 and Blyth signalled their intentions.
Knights robbed the Blyth defence on 19 and squared it back for Asante but the ball was nipped away for corner which Thomas drilled wide.
The visitors took the lead on 20 though when a corner on the left was headed down by captain Dale and slipped through the hands of Stevens, under his body and into the net (0-1, 20 mins).
On 27 Knights lifted the ball over the Blyth back line high up the field and Asante sprinted through but was forced wide by the keeper and a corner resulted from which Verma headed against the bar.
A foul on the right set up Knights with a freekick on 30 but despite Powell’s best efforts it ran out of play past the far post for a goal kick.
Ten minutes later after a lot of huff and puff from The Lambs, Verma struck a long range bouncing effort that Jameson was happy to watch out of play and the half time whistle blew.

HT: Tamworth 0    1 Blyth Spartans

Tamworth got the game back underway and inside the first three minutes Blyth had a penalty appeal turned down when Jones clipped Rivers in the box.
On 51 Maguire passed to Hopson who rolled it through to Dale and they split the Lambs defence but Stevens did well with a one handed stop to deny the latter's curling shot towards the top right corner.
But on 59 The Lambs conceded again. Jones blocked the run of Reid to earn himself a booking and from the corner of the box on the left of the Blyth front line Dale curled it inside the near post, with Stevens in full flight diving to his right but unable to get anywhere near it (0-2)
Substitutes Reid and Kotwica nearly made a quick impact as a header from the former was well saved one handed by Jameson on 67 and from the rebound the latter struck the bar from 12 yards – the third time in the game that the ‘woodwork’ came to Blyth’s resuce.
Then on 70 Reid got himself into a great position and headed a right wing cross on target but a reflex save from Jameson kept the sheet clean once again.
The visitors made a flurry of changes which disrupted the flow of the game somewhat and when Taylor came on for Asante there was only 10 minutes left.
Verma’s header looked to be going into the back of the net on 84 but Jameson denied him at the far post, and then Knights struck low from 20 yards but the keeper was just as equal to one on the floor.
Reid picked up a booking for a foul in front of the home dugout on 89 and five minutes added time were shown. The visitors cemented the points in added time through Dale who completed his hat-trick with a low powerful shot into the net from 8 yards.
Green tested Stevens as the visitors looked for a fourth and the whistle blew on defeat.
