FT: Alfreton Town 4    2 Tamworth

18 March 2014Faced with two more injuries to add to the ever growing list, Dale Belford was forced to make one change to Saturday’s team that fell to defeat to Forest Green with Townsend making way for Caprice.
Alfreton came into the game looking to make amends for the three educted points that had been applied when it was found that keeper Worsnop had not been registered correctly in a recent game. Also lining up for The home side were three ex-Lambs – Shaw and Harrad in Nicky Law’s starting eleven with Dan Bradley on the bench. Tamworth got the game underway kicking up hill away from the North Street end of the ground towards the away terracing, although the game was not segregated.
Kerry picked up an early yellow card for a late challenge on Poku. Alfreton worked the ball down field and forced a corner on the right on 4 but Thornton was well placed to clear the danger.
Harrad then hooked the ball into the box and Peniket was forced to be quick to head the ball away strongly. Shaw won the ball back and ripped the ball across the box but it went out on the left untouched.
A good quick break by the Lambs on 7 saw Godden released into the area chasing the all down but his first touch skipped off the surface and went back to Worsnop.
Peniket put The Lambs into the lead on seven minutes with a cool finish from the right of the goal after first being blocked by the covering defender and finding himself with the ball at his feet before slotting it into the far corner. (1-0, 7 mins) Harrad sent a low shot from the right of the box past the left hand upright on 14 and Belford pulled off a good one handed save to deny a strong header from Shaw.
The ball was worked back into the box and Harrad tried an overhead effort from 18 yards but the ball didn’t drop and cleared the bar by a few inches.
From a right sided throw Meadows tried a left footed shot from 20 yards on 18 but watched it screw out left of the area. Strong defending from The Lambs disrupted the home side well and forced Alfreton to look for options that didn’t really exist and Tamworth worked on breaking up field without leaving gaps that could be exploited too easily.
When Peniket lost the ball to a tackle on the right corner of the edge of the area on 28 and Kerry followed in he was tripped and sent into the air by Poku who picked up a yellow card for his efforts. The resulting freekick was struck poorly by Thornton though and the travelling fans behind the goal caught the high flying effort under the stand.
A right sided cross from Meadows on the half hour caused Belford to miss his punch and it was bundled behind for a corner which Shaw put into the area but Meadows resultant shot was off target. Keane caught Akinde on 33 and Law sent the left wing deadball into the area but a foul halted proceedings which restarted with a Tamworth freekick in the area.
Richards-Everton was booked for time wasting after a foul 25 yards out and Harrad’s freekick forced Belford into a good save. Akinde then followed this with a close range effort that Belford parried up and over the bar for a corner which Richards-Everton headed away.
Evans threw himself at a right footed drive from the right of the box from Law on 39 but Keane was penalised for tripping Akinde in the box on 39 and a penalty was awarded. Harrad stepped up and sent Belford the wrong way (1-1, 40 mins).
Shaw was set free by Akinde’s cross field ball from the left to the centre right on 45 but the resultant shot was well stopped by Belford and the corner was forced home by Tom Shaw amid a crowd of players. (1-2, 45 mins)

HT: Alfreton Town 2    1 Tamworth

Alfreton restarted proceedings but not before both sides made a change.
On 48 a low shot from the left of the D on the edge of the area was struck well enough by Keane, following a half clearance from a right sided corner, but it went wide of the left hand post.
Peniket’s attempt at goal took a deflected to give The lambs a left sided corner on 50 but the dead ball was wasted.
Mahon missed, rather than lost, the ball in the centre circle on 53 and Harrad received it from Poku but was forced to shoot quickly and curled and lifted his effort of target.
Law upended Evans on the left of the box to halt a good move down the wing by The Lambs pm 56 and Evans dusted himself down to force a corner off the head of Law at the near post.
Evans stayed where he was and took the flag kick bt it was plucked out of the air by Worsnop.
Akinde tried a shot from the right of the box on 63 but it curled away from the near post and the dive of Belford was not required in the end.
Kempson tripped Godden as he went for the ball in the area on 66 and a penalty was awarded so Godden stepped up on 67 to strongly fire home from the spot past Worsnop (2-2, 67 mins) Shouts for a third penalty of the night, this one against The Lambs on 68, were waved away by the referee when Akinde went down in the box.
Godden found Baker with a rolling pass into his path into the area on 70 but the ball was nipped away for a corner and Godden tried to hook a shot on goal from the flag kick but it went well wide of the mark.
Alfreton took the lead again on 73 through Akinde who struck powerfully home from the left of the box after two strikes came in from similar positions but were blocked, however nothing could be done about the third one which nestled in the bottom right hand corner. (2-3, 73 mins)
Akinde broke into rthe area on the left on 80 and slipped the ball back inside to Harrad who struck low for goal but missed the target, shooting past the far post but substitute Clayton widened the gap in the scoreline with a close range right footed finish on 83 after strong play from Akinde down the right of the box (2-4, 83 mins) Barnes-Homer released Peniket down the right on 87 but his low ball into the area was gathered by Worsnop.
Boss Belford gave Richards a run for the final four added minutes of the game and a late Evans strike was well held by Worsnop before the final whistle blew.
