Singh saves and James delivers

FT: Barwell 0    1 Tamworth

22 April 2019

On the back of the 5-0 Easter Saturday demolition  of Leiston, Tamworth’s penultimate game of the season took them to Kirkby Road for the first competitive fixture between the Lambs and the Canaries on the home side’s turf.
Gary Smith and Andy Danylyszyn made four changes to the side that ran out 48 hours previously with Gough continuing for the injured Kettle and the trio of Dwyer, Dias and Lait replacing Maphosa, Concannon (who took a place on the bench) and Waite (who watched from the stands).
The Lambs got the game underway attacking the Bowling Club end of the ground on a hard and dusty, but generally green, pitch but the first chances came at the other end when a right sided cross was met by Hollis and deflected high and wide for a corner on 6.
The flag kick came to nothing as Tamworth defended strongly and pushed the ball upfield. Lait headed out of midfield to Dias on the halfway line on 8 and he lifted the ball over the back of the home defence for Dwyer to sprint on to go one on one with keeper Castle but from the left of the box Dwyer could angle his shot past the keeper and he diverted it past the far post with an outstretched foot.
Then, it was time for Singh to show his prowess after a high boot from Green on home captain Hickey saw the referee award a penalty.
Hickey stepped up and blasted it to Singh’s right and the keeper dived to parry it away and The Lambs cleared the danger.
There was a brief spell of action in and around Singh’s box on 23 but a combination of Frances and Magunda dealt with the loose ball and a deep freekick from Castle on 24 put Barwell in possession in the final third again but Gough was on hand to see the ball out.
A foul on Dwyer in the left corner set up Beswick with the dead ball on 28 ad although it was defended strongly, Lait crossed from the other side looing for Gordon at the far post but it was headed away.
A break in play for drink and to allow the referee have a chat with both benches also gave Andrew Danylyszyn the chance to reorganise the side a little.
Frances took advantage of space down the right on 35 and struck a powerful cross at the near post forcing Castle to parry it away.
Gordon forced his way into the right of the area on 41 and got a shot away but it was off target. Brown-Hill and Lait chased the same ball to the touchline on 43 and after a tussle both picked up a yellow card for their efforts.
Only a few seconds additional time was played at the end of the first half, which ended goalless.

HT: Barwell 0    0 Tamworth

Tamworth made a change before The Canaries restarted proceedings and Ambris sent a swirling cross into the mix on 53 but Castle got up high to prevent Dwyer from getting his head to it.
A fine chipped through ball from Clement was matched by an equally good run through the back line by Dwyer but he couldn’t push the bounce past the keeper who batted it away. On 57 a run by Hollies found Towers in the box who in turn found Hickey and his low shot was on target but Singh was equal to it and a minute later Lait was replaced by Revarnelle James.
A deep throw into the box allowed Gordon to chase the ball down and once again Castle was just quick enough to push it away from his boot for a corner, but Eze took a knock in the play and needed extensive treatment before the flag kick could be taken.
Towers was unable to continue, with what looked like cramp and was replaced a couple of minutes later.
The Lambs took the lead on 73 when a high ball cleared out of the Lambs defence by Magduna fell for James on the right about 35 yards out. He hit it first time and it ropped over the out of position keeper and bounced into the far corner much to his and everyone else's dlight and amazement! (1-0, 73 mins)
A bouncing through ball dropped for Gordon on the right and he met it with Castle in close attendance, so a freekick was awarded and it was met by the head of Magunda but he couldn’t keep it down.
Hollis hooked a shot from the edge of the Lambs area of the target on 83 and at the other end James forced his way past his marker before firing a low cross into the box on 86.
It was James again on 88 from a through ball by Clement, but he was unable to get his shot on target under pressure from 12 yards out and the final whistle blew on another three points for The Lambs.
