Round one to The Boro

FT: Nuneaton Town 4    1 Tamworth

26 December 2017

After the 3-0 defeat toLeamington before Christmas, The Lambs travelled to Liberty Way hopeful of some post Christmas cheer against local rivals, and currently struggling Nuneaton Town.
Lambs boss Andy Morrell made two changes to the side with Dan Jezeph in for Shaun Rowley and Callum Powell came back into the side after suspension displacing Bradley Reid onto the bench.

Tamworth got the game underway but the home side went on the attack immediately and forced The Lambs back into their back third in front of the away end.
In a foray forwards Taylor was tripped and set up Knights with the deadball chance from 30 yards and despite some good play from Taylor and Powell Nuneaton cleared their lines.
Nuneaton finished what they had been threatening on 11 when Nicholson and Chambers combined but the ball eventually fell for Elliot and he squeezed it past Jezeph’s dive to his right and inside the left hand post. (0-1, 11 mins)
Knights nearly nipped the ball past Lyness on 13 as Tamworth countered from the restart but the home keeper blocked the ball and Nuneaton cleared again.
Jezeph punched a corner away but it was worked back to Nicholson who fired a low shot out past the far post on 17.
20 Nicholson finished with a clipped close range shot over the despairing dive of Jezeph after Bewick had found Nti on the right who in turn drilled it low into the centre of the box for Nicholson to finish. (0-2, 20 mins)
Nicholson then curled a shot just wide of the mark as he looked for Nuneaton’s third while Taylor forced Wildin to head a goalbound shot away from the target at the other end on 22.
Jones forced Lyness to push the ball away from the target on 24.
But two goals in the space of two minutes exposed The Lambs defensive frailties once again.
First Nicholson put a low cross in from the right of the box and it was touched pas Jezeph by Chambers (0-3, 27.mins) and a minute later Chambers finished a smart move and cross from the right with a volley past Jezeph (0-4, 28 mins)
A Nuneaton corner on the right on 34 caused more problems for the Lambs defence and Nicholson’s ball in from the left of the box was just missed by Chambers who got the better of the Lambs defence again.
Ferry’s shot from the edge of the area went over the target after Nicholson and Chambers got the better of Kettle on 38. Tamworth rode out the rest of the half without further incident.

HT: Nuneaton Town 4    0 Tamworth

Morrell made a double change during the half time break and Tamworth tried to get themselves back into the game quickly but Lyness had other ideas on 56 when Verma’s header from Morley’s corner was stopped by the keeper.
A defensive header was flicked onto the roof of the net on 62 and from the right sided corner Verma was unlucky with his effort which went wide of the mark.
Tamworth made their final chance on 66 with Reid replacing Powell. A low whipped in cross from Knights on the left saw Ashton put the ball past Lyness on 73 for an own goal to give The Lambs a glimmer of hope (1-4, 73 mins)
On 83 Reid spotted Lyness out of his area and tried a finish from the left of the box but it was headed away from danger as it dropped towards the goal.
Four minutes added time was shown and a corner was whipped into the box by Morey, but the final whistle blew on a result that will want to be quickly forgotten.
