The Lambs welcomed Welling United to The Lamb for the second time in a week for their rearranged FA Trophy tie after Mark Cooper’s side had fell 2-0 to Forest Green Rovers at the weekend. Cooper made 4 changes to the side from Saturday with Rikki Bains, Jamie Price, Jon McGrath and Tom Kemp all out for one reason or another and in came Matt Williams, Graeme Law, Taiwo Atieno and Ryan Laight into the starting eleven.
The prize for the winners – a home tie against Worcester City on Saturday 03 Feb and £5,000 – but The Lambs were also mindful of the games going on in the League as the cup tie went on..
With four of his five attacking players on the park Tamworth pushed forward from the kick off but Welling showed themselves to be up for the win too with a spirited start to the opening exchanges.
On 7 Jose Veiga blocked an effort from close range from Danny Kedwell but the Lambs broke from the corner and Stevenson set up Kyle Storer who shot from distance but his shot rose over the bar.
Jake Edwards lined up a strike for himself on 10 but cleared the Meadow Street end with his effort after another good build up by the home side.
Williams tried a shot on the turn from the edge of the area on 11 but his shot went wide of the right hand upright.
Then on 19 Simon Heslop collected a long kick by Veiga on the left wing, cut inside, beat one defender and curled a right footed shot over the top of Welling ‘keeper to give The Lambs the lead (1-0).
The Lambs then conceded on 28 via Danny Kedwell (his fifth in the Trophy) who had a relatively easy finish from 8 yards after Che Stadhart had taken the ball through the back of the Tamworth defence and squared for Kedwell to slot under Veiga. (1-1)
A foul on Edwards in the area after good work by Williams on 40 was waved away by the referee but Williams picked the ball up and forced a good save from Hyde from distance.
A melee in the area saw Tamworth clear the ball off the line following a Welling corner five minutes before the break but both sides went in level at half time
Kevin Spencer took to the field after the restart in place of Adie Smith and the youngster showed no fear dropping in at right back. With the temperature dropping the pitch became harder underfoot in the second half resulting in increased difficulty to control the ball but this didn’t stop both sides trying.
But there was little in the way of real chances until just after the hhour mark when Heslop and the Willaims shot for goal but both we’re unsuccessful in their efforts.
Jamie Price came into the fray on 64 and Cooper switched the formation to three at the back.
Stevenson headed a Heslop cross from the right high over the bar on 70 then Edwards forced a one handed out of Hyde with a well placed header on 72.
Atieno headed Graeme Laws ball in goal ward seconds later forcing another corner from Hyde’s stop but the same players header from Price’s flagkick went wide of the mark.
A jinking run down the right by Stevenson saw the nippy striker shoot low and his shot beat everyone except the far post then Atieno glanced a header wide of the same upright shortly after as the Lambs started to exert some real pressure on their visitors.
The pendulum then swung the other way with Welling pushing into the Tamworth half as a replay drew near and Veiga did well to save at the feet of sub Keith Rowland on 81.
Four minutes added time produced a corner for the Lambs but Edwards headed over from close range and Rowland challenged Veiga in his area before the Lamsb keeper denied Steve Harper a last second winner and the two sides must try again at Gravesend and Northfleet’s ground on Tuesday 30th, kick off 7.45pm.
