Rain stops play
19 July 2014The Lambs arrived at Butlin Road with the sun trying to break through the clouds, but were focred to abandon their third pre-season friendly following a prolonged downpour 10 minutes into the second half.
Boss Dale Belford fielded a strong team line up of mainly signed players and The Lambs took the game to their hosts quickly.
Newest signing Kayden Jackson nearly opened the scoring early on, taking the ball around Lambs second choice keeper Phil Smith (playing as the normal Rugby keeper was unavailable), but struck the ball into the side netting.
Shane Clarke side footed over after a cut back from Jackson and Simmonds right footed shot went wide of the mark as the chances continued to come.
Michael Townsend was forced from the field on 20 and his replacement struck well forcing Smith into action to deny him, but he was unable to deny the same player finishing from 6 yards on 22 from the resultant corner. (1-0, 22 mins)
Connor Taylor floated a bal over from the right on 30 but was substitued soon after and Sleath forced Smith into a fingertip save for a corner which Dan Preston headed over from 12 yards.
Rugby almost equalised at the end of the half when Towers rounded Belshaw and rolled his shot goalward but it struck the far post and was cleared by the covering Lambs defenders shortly before the whistle blew.
Clarke looked to have made it two on 51 but his close range finish was ruled out for offside and the heavens quickly opened, accompanied by thunder and lightening.
The downpour made the game unplayable with the officials halting proceedings after waiting 10-15 minutes for the storm to clear, and fans remained under shelter unable to get to the clubhouse for some time after official word came over the tannoy.
