Moatmen sunk in opening encounter
08 July 2008
The Lambs hit five past Rovers in the first friendly of the 2008-09 pre-season and boss Gary Mills will be generally impressed with his sides workout.
With Craig McAughtrie away, Des Lyttle stepped in as centre back and although Tamworth conceded a soft goal after 12 minutes when the home side broke from a Lambs corner allowing Dave Blenkinsop to finish from the edge of the area Tamworth found themsleves 3-1 to the good at halftime by a combination of hardwork and determination.
Former Coventry City player Lee Hildreth finished a good ball to the edge of the area from Martin Foster on 20 to level the tie and five minutes later Gareth Sheldon's skill left Dave Clarke for dead on the left of the box. Sheldon duly rolled the ball accross the six yard area for Nick Wright and he made it 2-1 at the second attempt.
Wright was looking lively and saw a header cleared from Alex Rodman's cross on 31 before the former Nuneaton player curled home a beauty, on 39, into the far corner from the right of the box to make it 3-1.
Five minutes into the second half Wright bagged his second of the night following a great ball to his feet from Sheldon before Mills made wholesale changes on 57, bringing on six subs. And while it took a few minutes for the new players to settle down it wasn't long before Cameron Jones took the ball to the by-line and fired low accross the face of goal for Dean Lea for place past home keeper Dave Clarke to make it 5-1.
Rovers captain Jamie Hood reduced the arrears with a far post header on 73 to leave the final score 5-2 to Tamworth and while there is no doubt both sides will be working hard on and off the field before the season kicks off in a few weeks the crowd of just under 250 went home having been thoroughly entertained.
