Lots of red in Manchester
15 August 2015
Tamworth arrived at the new Broadhurst Park ground of the home side on the back of two victories with their newly promoted hosts yet to record a point in their first season in the Vanarama National North.
Andy Morrell made one change to the side that started against Worcester in midweek, with Ross Dyer starting his first game of the campaign.
The Lambs got the game underway, attacking the large banked terrace behind the goal and an early chance fell when Newton whipped the ball in from the left wing but Dyer was not quick enough to get anywhere near the box.
At the other end Belshaw gathered a long freekick that was nearly met by Lindfield.
The Lambs took the lead on 4 minutes when Green played a neat one two with Durrell allowing the former to slip past the defence and into the box and slide the ball under Carnell for his third of the season. (1-0, 4 mins)
Durrell’s bright pink boots caused problems for the home side down the Lambs right wing and his cross found Newton on 12 but the striker was unable to get a shot on target, and then on 16 a ball from Clarke in midfield found the same player but his jinking run ended with a low shot wide of the mark.
Durrell was booked for a challenge on Wright on 17.
He then threaded a weighty pass through to Newton but neither he nor Burns got get a shot on target and it deflected wide. Preston headed away from danger on 19 when Fallon broke through from midfield and a minute later when Durrell did similar his ball into the box was just inches away from the boot of Dyer.
Tomassen’s teasing cross from the right on 24 was headed behind by the home defence for another Durrell corner which came to nothing.
Strong conceded a corner with a well timed tackle on 26 and Ashworth connected with his head but Burns was quickest to the ball and booted it clear.
But from the ensuing play, the home side equalised when the left sided cross fell inviting for Ashworth’s at the far post to volley home (1-1, 27 mins)
Both sides tried to work the ball towards goal and Clarke saw his shot from the edge of the area blocked before Fallow struck wide from a similar position at the other end on 37.
Smith tried a long range right footed effort on 4 but it was never going to trouble Carnell and flew a few feet over his bar.
Two minutes added time was shown at the end of the half which ended without further incident.
The home side restarted proceedings with The Lambs attacking the less splendid end of the ground and Durrell won the ball on the edge of the box but his low shot was easy for Carnell.
United then turned up the heat and kept the Lambs penned back for the next 5 minutes culminating in a superb one handed stop from Belshaw to deny a header from Daniels after the ball rebounded around the box with a great deal of ferocity.
Belshaw raced out of his box to flick the ball away from danger on the hour and Andy Morrell made two changes shortly after.
Strong was booked for a challenge on Lindfield on 66 that saw the number 11 rolling on the floor in agony before getting up and trotting in to the area for the freekick, which Green headed away strongly.
A deep freekick from the left of the pitch was met past the far post by Bayunu and his ball back into the box was cleared under a lot of pressure from the home side who continued to hold the upperhand in most areas.
Dyer tumbled over Cooke just outside Belshaw’s area on 84 and went down holding his thigh and while he was off the field, Taylor was tackled by Wright who received a straight red card for his efforts to set up a tense finish of eleven v ten.
Four minutes added time were shown at the end of the game and Green picked up the loose ball after good work from Clarke, but his shot went well wide.
Strong was shown a second yellow card on 90+2 following a poor challenge on Fallon in the left back area of the Lambs defence and the final whistle blew on a point a piece.
