Last gasp penalty robs Lambs
16 August 2014Tamworth got the game underway, attacking the Meadow Street End in the first half.
A freekick from the left fell to Hildreth but his low strike came off the defenders and rolled back to Hurst in goal. A good run from Jackson on 5 and a teasing cross from Sleath on 12 were the highlights of the opening 15 minutes.
A good work of the ball forward saw Sleath cross to Jackson on 18 and the latter’s header was gathered by Hurst.
Daniels fed Hibbert who in turn rolled the ball to Clarke on 20 and he hit a low ball just wide of the left hand post before County mounted their first real attack and forced a left sided corner.
Visiting captain Milligan floated it into the box and Hibbert headed clear but only as far as Moses and he was brought down by Mettam who escaped with a talking to. The dead ball, on the left outside the box was fired in by Milligan and the strike clipped the top of the bar on the way through.
Play immediately switched to the other end and Hibbert forced a save at the right of the goal from Hurst while Stockport looked dangerous from a couple of corners.
On 35 Hibbert was denied by a fantastic reaction save from Hurst, down to his left after Daniel’s cross from the left. Purdie denied the visitors getting a final ball into the box on 43 while Jackson’s ball from the left was hooked behind for a left sided corner at the Meadow Street End on 44. The corner came in from Daniels and rebounded to Preston but his shot on the turn went over the target and the half time whistle blew.
After a change in the Lambs line up, County got the second half underway and Purdie’s ball was pushed away for a right sided corner which was headed powerfully clear of the box.
A freekick on 49 flicked off a number of heads before setting up nicely for Hildreth but he sliced his shot when well placed on the left of the six yard box.
Baker went down as he moved into the box but the referee was having none of the penalty claim and the stalemate continued as Thornton came on for Mettam.
Stockport’s Ryan hit a lot shot but couldn’t get enough on it to trouble Belshaw too much.
A short pass from Thornton saw the ball bounce up as Hildreth tried to recover on 62 and he was penalise for handball, allowing Milligan a dead ball which Belshaw punched clear.
The Lambs escaped as Ryan and Spencer combined down the left of the area and the ball bounced over the outstretched arms of Belshaw and just wide of the left hand post on 70.
Thornton’s corner caused some problems on 74, with Hurst unable to take the ball cleanly, but the return ball in was not met by Adams well enough to continue the pressure.
Thornton then found Hibbert in the left channel but the striker’s shot was easy for Hurst and on 81, Jackson burst into the box from the left wing but his curling shot went out past the far post. There were strong shouts for a penalty after a pull on Jackson on 83 but nothing was given by the match officials.
In added time at the end of the game, Ryan burst into the box following a quick move forward by the visitors after Trainer had sold a pass short, and when Belshaw slid and collected the ball cleanly a penalty was awarded to the disdain of the home fans and delight of the travelling County fans.
Milligan stepped up and sent Belshaw the wrong way from the spot to win the game for Stockport. (0-1, 90+ mins)
