Lambs win El Plastico again
01 April 2017
After the defeat at Edgeley Park seven days previously, Andy Morrell made four changes to the starting eleven for the return ‘El Plastico’ fixture against former Lambs defender Simon Weaver’s Town side.
Dan Jezeph replaced James Belshaw in goal, while Jed Davies, Ben Fox and Reece Sytche who had netted twice in midweek for the National League representative side, all came at the expense of Callum Powell, Paul Green and Connor Taylor.
Tamworth attacked the Meadow Street end in the first half, but the ball spent most of the first few minutes at the Castle End where the majority of the Tamworth Junior League boys and girls had congregated.
Styche hit the first shot of the game from 25 yards and forced Crook to catch the ball at chest height after some flowing play from the left and when Newton picked up the ball on the edge of the area he forced the keeper into another block for a corner on the left.
From the dead ball Dyer tried to get his head onto it at the far post but Crook was there again to foil The Lambs.
A Harrogate freekick deflected off the wall for a corner on the right on 13 which came to nothing.
A long kick from Jezeph was controlled by Newton on the edge of the left of the area on 18 and he beat one man then the next before firing low inside the far post past Crook to make it 1-0.
The game continued at a similar pace and with chances at a premium although Ainge did find himself in a couple of good positions but missed the target first with a powerful but high volley and then with a misplaced header.
Newton went close with a shot on the right of the box on 40 which struck the outside of the near post and a dipping effort from Styche from 25 yards out went just over the bar.
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half which ended without further incident.
Tamworth restarted the game and there was not much to report until the hour Ainge was booked and then a freekick was awarded on the right for the visitors which saw Burrell head it and as Jezeph tried to catch the ball at height he appeared to be impeded and it dropped over him into the net, but there was nothing given and the goal stood. (1-1, 60 mins)
Styche was brought down by Agnew on the left and the Harrogate player picked up a yellow card for his efforts.
Styche was booked on 74 and in the next move spotted Crook out of position and tried a low shot from the right channel that would probably have beaten the keeper but went wide of the right hand post by a yard.
When Styche took the ball into the area and was upended by Crook on 77, there was only one outcome – a penalty for Tamworth which Newton slammed home from the spot to regain the lead (2-1, 78 mins)
Four minutes later Day made it all square again, Ainge headed it into the danger area and Jezeph was unable to prevent it going in under pressure by Day on the line. (2-2, 82 mins)
Jezeph prevent Lesley from slotting the ball home after Town advanced over the half way line and he went one on one with the keeper.
Five minutes added time was shown at the end of the game and Powell nearly burst through down the left only to be denied by the covering defender.
Tamworth kept the ball and pushed it into the far coner by the clubhouse as the seconds ticked down to three points for The Lambs.
