Lambs unable to come back against Dragons
14 January 2012
The Lambs welcomed The Dragons for a league fixture a week after both sides enjoyed a run out in the FA Cup 3rd Round. Although Tamworth's road to Wembley was now over, Wrexham's was still going and the home faithful were hopeful that the visitors would be distracted by the midweek replay at The Racecourse Ground against Brighton.
Marcus Law made four changes to the side that ran out at Goodison Park welcoming back perhaps the freshest legs in the squad; those of Paul Green returning after suspension while Nick McKoy made his home debut.
A win for Wrexham would see them leapfrog Fleetwood and go top of the table while a win for The Lambs would help create a little daylight in the middle of the table.
And so after the prematch huddle and with Wrexham in their change strip, the reds lined up against the blues once again and kicked off proceedings towards the Castle End.
1: Mayebi gathers a high ball from a left wing high cross from Thomas while at the other end Oji's defensive header is only half cleared and Morrell tries to find space to shoot but the move breaks down.
3: Thomas's run down the left wins the winger a corner from the defensive block. Wilson's corner goes long for McKoy but the ball is cleared.
5: GOAL: A long ball forward finds Morrell who switches it into the path of Tolley and he strikes it sweetly from 20 yards into the bottom right hand corner to give Wrexham the lead. (0-1 , 5 mins)
8: Harris is booked for a foul on Thomas in front of the Shed but the freekick goes straight to Mayebi and his long kick is chased down by Tait and Speight. The Lambs defender gets there first with a diving header back to Collister.
13: Tolley strikeds a volley a goal from 18 yards but finds Knight-Percival in the way and the visitors keep the pressure on but the official spots an infringement and Tamworth can relax for a few moments.
16: McKoy finds Patterson down the left and the striker cuts into the box but his shot is deflected out for a left sided corner which Wilson takes short and gets in back before winning another and this time it goes long and Wrexham clear their lines.
20: Tamworth win a freekick on the left and Thomas puts the ball into the box. Mayebi rolls over Christie and takes the ball cleanly at height, but the keeper is not happy with the ‘challenge' and the referee warns Christie.
21: Mayebi almost passes the ball out to one of three Lambs players hunting around the edge of the area but finds the gap and Wrexham win a freekick on the main stand side of the ground that is hotly disputed by the seats.
22: Harris wastes a freekick after a foul by Green as a combination of Tait and Courtney clear the ball strongly.
25: There are half shouts for a penalty as Christie goes down as he turns looking for the ball but they are waved away quickly by the referee.
27: Collister is called into action when Morrell links up with Speight but his shot lacks power and it's easy for the home keeper.
28: Tamworth break but the Wrexham defence hold strong as Tait and finally Christie look to put balls into the danger area.
29: GOAL: It looks too easy for Wrexham as Speight plays a neat one two in left of the Tamworth area with Harris and diverts the return ball into the far corner for his sides second of the afternoon (0-2, 29 mins)
31: Collister is forced to come out and clashes with Morrell causing the referee to stop play. There's no real question of an intentional foul, so play restarts with a drop ball on the half way line which Wrexham punt back to the keeper.
34: A scuffed pass from midfield somehow turns into a shooting chance for Christie but his attempted shot from distance is way off target and lacks power.
37: Christie wins a foul on the right wing but Thomas fails to find a red shirt. However, he works hard to get the ball back and feeds Courtney to chip into the area. He finds Christie in a good position but the striker is offside.
38: At the other end and with Speight waiting expectantly, Tait does just enough to take a right sided cross from Cieslewicz away from danger.
40: Following a flick on in the right of the box, Morrell is foiled by Collister at the near post and Wrexham have to make do with a corner instead. However, Francis almost diverts the ball into his net and Collister dives late but is grateful to see it go out past the same post for another flag kick which Christie heads away.
43: At the end of a good passing move into the middle of the park, Christie is spoken to again by the referee after a niggly foul in the centre circle. Wrexham keep possession but it's Oji that puts the ball back to Collister with a well timed header.
45: One minute added time is shown with the visitors pressing forwards and before the half time whistle is blown, the referee is forced to deal with a situation between Wilson and Harris on the half way line. Wilson receives a booking but the Wrexham player escapes despite conceding the freekick.
Wrexham kick off the second half after making a change as Speight makes way for Wright.
48: Obeng goes for goal with a right footed toe poke and Collister smothers it as it heads towards the far post.
49: The Dragons push forward and win a corner on the left which is headed behind by Christie at the near post for another which Collister gets his hands to.
50: Collister is called into action again from a long range shot from Tolley as the visiting fans start to make some noise.
51: Christie is booked for a foul on the Lambs right wing after a late challenge.
52: Cieslewicz feeds Obeng down the right and the latter advances into the area but rolls his shot across the face of goal and out past the far post.
54: GOAL: Patterson makes a great run down the right and cuts past the last defender before pulling the ball back low for Wilson to place his shot from 12 yards into the top right hand corner. (1-2, 54 mins)
54: Patterson and Thomas are replaced by Gudger and Shariff respectively.
58: Collister pulls off a fine save from Knight-Percival who makes space for himself with a quick run down the right after a foul in midfield goes unpunished. From the corner comes in a Knight -Percival gets a head to it but somehow puts the chance past the near post.
62: A freekick on the left sees Knight-Percival strike the top left hand corner of the woodwork with an unmarked header.
63: Wilson strikes for goal from the right channel but Mayebi is equal to the shot
65: Both sides make a change of personnel.
69: Cieslewicz strikes low but off target from the right of the area and Collister is forced to watch it go past his dive and out past the far post.
70: Gudger is booked for a foul on Cieslewicz as the Wrexham player advances down the right channel but Keates can only put his freekick into the Lambs defensive wall.
74: A foul just past the half way line allowa Green to put the ball into the danger area but he gets it back and plants it onto the head of McKoy but the nod down is easy for Mayebi to collect.
76: Isaac makes a timely challenge on Obeng to deny his run towards the area and the visitors make their final change as the player boss makes way for fresh legs.
80: It was The Lambs who found themselves with a chance to push forward though but Gudger's cross was taken at height by Mayebi.
82: A Tamworth move down the right is rewarded with a corner but Green is unable to get enough direction on the dead ball and his header flashes out past the far post.
83: It's now all Tamworth as they go in search of an equaliser and Gudger jinks around before firing a right footed shot at Mayebi from 20 yards.
86: Tamworth keep pushing forward but are unable to get a decent shot away and when a freekick is awarded on the half way line Collister sprints up as his teammates pack out the box, but Mayebi is first to it.
88: Cieslewicz forces Collister to parry the ball away from his right sided shot, while Green lays prostrate on the ground following what appeared to be a blow to the face. Play eventually stops and Green is helped back to his feet.
90: Five minutes added time is shown and the home faithful sense that something could be gotten from the game urging their side on from the terraces. However, a lot of the first couple of minutes are wasted as a drop ball is contested and a foul eventually given against Tamworth.
93: Shariff is felled down the left wing as he goes shoulder to shoulder with Obeng and Tait fires it into the box but the ball is cleared away for a corner on the left and Tait fires it into the box. Mayebi collects and sends Cieslewicz free who in turns plays Wright through on Collister but the Wrexham player screws his shot well wide of the mark and the final whistle blows when play restarts.
