Lambs topple Cards
18 November 2006
Lambs boss Mark Cooper made just two changes to the side that had defeated Burton in the cup last weekend against Woking and had succeeded in his quest to sign Simon Heslop on loan from Barnsley in time for the game, with the Lambs looking for some much needed league points to move them away from the relegation zone.
Inside the first minute Ollie Berquez shot right footed forcing Jose Veiga to tip the ball over his bar while just 60 seconds later Jon Stevenson crossed from the right for Taiwo Ateino to head for goal, but the ball span wide of the near post.
But in the 3rd minute Tamworth failed to deal with a throw in on the right and the ball found it’s way across the area to Steve Ferguson who found time to turn and shoot from the left of the area and his low shot skimmed past Veiga to put The Cards 1-0 to the good.
Atieno struck from 35 yards on 14 minutes and his effort flew wide of the left hand upright but three minutes later a deflected lobbed shot from Jon McGrath leveled the tie. He found space for himself on the right of the area and struck for goal only to see it get a slight touch on the way and loop over the visiting ‘keeper, Shwan Jalal and in at the far post. And it was Jalal who was to blame for the goal having kicked a clearance straight to the head of Heslop who nodded on to McGrath in the build up.(1-1)
And with 21 gone it was 2-1 to Tamworth. Atieno supplied an inch perfect cross from the right by-line which was met by the head of Darryl Taylor six yards out and in the centre of goal for his first goal in a red shirt.
On 39 Steve Burton showed, for the first time in the half, what he was capable of with a run and rasping drive from 30 yards which beat Jalal, but clipped the top of the crossbar and went out of play.
Seven minutes into the second half Craig McAllister shot wide from the edge of the area when he should perhaps have done better but turned Fergurson’s low right wing cross well wide past the far post.
Veiga pulled off a fantastic stop on 56 minutes to deny McAllister who had beaten the Lambs defence, but could not finish off the move and was denied by Veiga who dived bravely at his feet to collect the ball.
And Veiga pulled two another finger tips save on 58 minutes, firstly from a strike by Ferguson and then from Steve Evans right wing cross that threatened to dip under the Lamb’s keeper’s bar before Atieno fired a right footed shot wide of the far post from the left of the area on 65
Cooper brought fresh attacking legs into play on 72 through Matt Williams but it was Burton who released Atieno on 74 with an overhead kick however, the Woking defence was too quick and blocked his effort.
Williams headed McGrath’s corner over the bar from close range on 79 as The Lambs looked to make certain of the points but the Cards also pushed for an equalizer firing wide and high from distance on a handful of occasions.
5 minutes added time prolonged the wait but not before Steve Burton had bagged his 6th of the season from an Atieno through ball. He beat the offside trap took his time and fired low past Jalal to make it 3-1
