Lambs through to 1st Round Proper

FT: Tamworth 3    1 Harrogate Town

28 October 2006

The Lambs welcomed Nationwide North Harrogate Town to The Lamb with both sides hoping for victory and a place in the 1st Round of the FA Cup.
Lambs boss Mark Cooper was without Adie Smith (suspended), Tom Kemp (ill), Bradley Thomas (unable to play as advised by Yeovil), Matthew Ghent (no longer at club) and
Burton (on bench) from the previous Saturday. So the five players coming into the squad after the draw with York City were: New ‘keeper Jose Veiga, new signing Darryl Taylor while Michael Tuohy, Kyle Storer and Gavin McAllum came of last weekends bench to feature.

After a fairly slow start by both sides, Tamworth started to turn the screw a little, mainly through Taiwo Atieno who tried a couple of longer ranger strikes at former Lamb James Lindley.

But in the 10th minute Michael Tuohy brought down Danny Holland for a penalty which the same player put past Veiga and into the far corner (0-1)
Tamworth pushed hard to get back into the game quickly and the closest they came in the next 10 minutes was via an Atieno header at the far post from McGrath’s corner on 19 which bounced wide of the near post.
Until on 20 minutes Chris Ellerker miscued a clearance and the ball curled into the path of Matt Williams who made no mistake from 8 yards out to level the scores (1-1). Statto fact: The last time James Lindley conceded a goal at the Lamb prior to this one was on
21st February 2004 (playing for Tamworth against Farnborough)!
Ellerker tried to make amends or his earlier mistake with a rasping drive at Veiga but the Lambs keeper threw himself to block the shot and recovered to stop Kirk Jackson following up on the half hour mark.
After a jinking run and left wing cross by Gavin McAllum, Williams tried his luck with a close range volley but it lacked power and Lindley collected easily on 34.
McAllum sprinted through and lifted the ball into the net on 40 minutes but his well taken effort was ruled out for offside.
HT: 1-1

On 48 Johm McGrath forced Lindley to tip over from a 30 yard left sided free kick but The Lambs were unable to capitalise on the resulting corner.
Colin Hunter struck well wide from the edge of the area for
Harrogate on 51 and at the other end Tamworth won another corner from Joe Kendrick’s deep cross but the ball whistled through everyone and out for a goal kick.

On 66 minutes a wayward cross from the left from Gavin McAllum almost sneaked under Lindley’s bar but it stayed in flight and clipped the top on it’s way out of play.
Atieno bagged his sixth goal of the season on 71 minutes to give
Tamworth the lead. John McGrath’s freekick on the right was headed down by Simon Weaver and Atieno turned on the loose ball and fired low past Lindley from six yards. (2-1)
A mazy run from substitute Jon Stevenson almost produced a shooting opportunity for the former Alfreton striker on 80 but neither he nor Williams could get a shot away and the
Harrogate defence cleared.
McGrath capped a fine performance by strinking a late freekick from 20 yards out around the wall and into the back of the net on 90 minutes. (3-1)

Six minutes added time prolonged proceedings but neither side could change the scoreline and The Lambs went through to face ???? (TBA!) in the 1st Round Proper in a fortnight.
