Lambs through on penalties
14 January 2014
A thoroughly wet but open welcome awaited Dale Belford's side at Victory Park as the two sides tried again to progress in the FA Trophy with a quarter final tie away at Grimsby Town awaiting the winner.
Belford made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 on Saturday with Hildreth and Haworth coming in for Baker and Todd.
Chorley made one change with goalscorer Mather out and Stephenson taking his place.
The home side got the game underway and in the second minute The Lambs won a duo of corners, the first of which Peniket was beaten to and the second Ashton took on the floor.
At the other end, Cottrell's left wing cross was headed behind for a goal kick and the Lambs keeper, bedecked in bright orange in a bid to out shine his opposite number in yellow, got a song sang at him by the massed home faithful.
They were silenced on 10 though when Haworth's ball through to Chadwick set up the striker on the edge of the box and he cut back before firing low past Ashton who looked to be left flat footed as the ball rolled past him. (1-0, 10 mins)
Around the 15 minute mark, the home side threatened from a couple of corners and kept the ball in the final third, with Dean and Teague causing problems down the left and with the conditions slowly getting worse it was getting increasingly more difficult to stay on your feet, as Evans and Keane demonstrated.
On 24 Kerry managed to turn and get a shot away by the right hand post, but Ashton was covering and smothered the ball, but the home side broke quickly through Stephenson who sent Hine free down the right wing and he got the better of Thomas before sending a low ball into the box which Cottrell turned home from a yard out. (1-1, 25 mins)
Evans was booked for a thumping tackle on the half way line on 29 and as Hildreth awaited return to the pitch following treatment for an earlier challenge, the Chorley freekick was nodded just wide of the mark.
Chorley forced a corner on the right on 33 and it eventually fell to Roscoe who leaned back when he struck side footed from 20 yards and put the ball over the target into the home fans.
Dean struck right footed on 38 and the ball curled wide of the right hand post, watched all the way by Belford, then Jarvis took on the Lambs defence and forced a corner on the left which Belford stopped when Dean tried to force it home.
Dean struck the bar with a right footed sweep after beating the offside trap on 41 and Whitham was unable to mop up the quick rebound meaning an escape for The Lambs.
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half and Chorley pressed but were kept away from goal until the whistle blew.
The rain had abated at half time, but started again by the time Chorley got the game underway again, with the home side kicking into the wind.
A James Dean cross from the right wing on 49 was cut out by Evans but The Magpies continued with their foray's forward until the offside flag denied Hine's run.
Howarth put the ball in the net but the move had already stopped due to a high boot in the build up.
Thomas was unable to clear the ball in the left back position on 57 and Chorley's corner from Jarvis which was cleared.
Howarth forced his way down the right and his deflected shot earned Capaldi a corner which Peniket headed and Chadwick was unable to turn home, so Thomas chipped into the roof of the net from 8 yards to restore The Lambs lead on the hour. (2-1, 60 mins)
Kerry and Haworth combined to put the ball into the box from the left of the area on 64 but Peniket was beaten to the header.
Chorley goalscorer Cottrell finished a spell of strong pressure with a right footed shot that went straight into Belford's grasp ad on 78 Chadwick left the field ahead of Thursday's TV game at Alfreton, being replaced by Richards.
Richards prevented the run of O'Brien on 82 and set up Whitham with a freekick on the right wing but the Lambs forward headed it clear before Belford was forced to smother the return ball into the box.
With all but one Chorley player and Ashton in the home half, a quick Lambs break away saw Haworth advance over the half way line with only the keeper to beat but his chip shot from 40 yards went wide of the left hand upright on 84.
A deep freekick from the home side then evaded everyone at the far post and despite the big kicks upfield from Belford, Chorley continued to spend more time in the Tamworth half than the other way around.
Four minutes added time were shown at the end of the game and when a corner was awarded against Belford's catch over the area the home side pushed on and Teague fired home from close range in the ensuing confusion.
The Lambs got the first period of added time underway and play continued much the same with both teams trying to go end to end as the pitch and players got muddier by the minute.
There were little in the way of chances at either end and the first half of extra time ended with the scoreline the same.
Chorley restarted proceedings and on 120 Cottrell struck from distance but failed to get his shot near the target, and a long ball from the left floated over everyone, before Stephenson glanced a header well wide of the mark from a dangerous cross from the right.
Chorley continued to camp out in the Lambs half and when the ball got stuck in the mud in the penalty area, boots flew in to try and stab the ball away until the referee decided he'd seen enough and halted play.
A freekick on the right wing for the home side was then forthcoming which Jarvis sent into the box and Baker sliced it behind.
Belford batted Dean's purposeful shot away from danger with just a couple of minutes remaining but there was no way of separating the two sides and penalties were required.
And so to penalties; Chorley struck first and Belford saved three of the eight he faced, before Keane scored the 16th penalty taken to make it 6-5 to The Lambs.
