Lambs spring off the bottom for forst time since New Year
06 March 2007
Lambs' boss Gary Mills made just one change to the side that defeated Northwich on Saturday. Matt Williams came back from suspension and in for Jon Stevenson, while Ludovic Quistin had to start on the bench again, alongside Simon Heslop who also returned from suspension.
A win for the Lambs could see them move off the bottom of the table but with a full fixture list (except St Albans) anything could happen…
There was a tentative start to the game and a strangely subdued atmosphere at The Lamb. The Shots won a corner early on but it was easily taken by Jose Veiga and on 10 Daryl Taylor forced the visitors to concede a flag kick, but Williams’ header whistled past the far post and was cleared.
The Lambs had treated the game like an away fixture arriving en masse by coach at 6.30pm and did look lively but lacking a killer ball out of midfield but a couple of freekicks on opposite sides of the field provided half chances though the visitors cleared the danger each time.
Anthony Charles went closest to opening the scoring on 29 with a weak header at Veiga’s goal which The Lambs' keeper took easily before John McGrath burst out of midfield and won a freekick on the edge of the opposition's area. McGrath's effort was wasted and Jake Edwards failed to connect with the loose ball when it made its way back into the area.
Aldershot won a corner on 34 following some forward play and Simon Weaver denied Charles a shooting chance with a good tackle.
Charles then denied a run from Taylor on 38 reaching the edge of the area and two minutes later Weaver’s clearance cannoned back to Jonny Dixon but the Shots' forward wasted his shot on goal.
The diminutive Ryan Williams rifled a shot at Veiga on 41 but it was Nikki Bull who had to get the ball out of the back of the net on 42.
McGrath’s freekick was chipped forward to Edwards who forced Bull into a low save with a left footed shot on the turn but the Shots keeper couldn’t hold onto the ball and Taylor finished from five yards to give the Lambs' the lead. (1-0)
Ricky Newman came very close to an equaliser in first half stoppage time, but fired his right footed shot inches past the left hand upright.
Taylor crossed from the right for Edwards on 48 but miscued his shot when well placed and actually saw the ball come back off his other boot.
Aldershot pushed forward more than they had and John Grant came close to netting for his side on the hour with a drive but thankfully for The Lambs it was wide of the mark.
A melee in the Lambs area after Veiga had collected a corner halted play for a while as the group of tussling players was separated and the Shots won another corner on 66 which Veiga collected and then a freekick was forthcoming on 68 which was headed away for yet another flag kick. Mark Molesley picked up a booking for his efforts from the corner and it gave Tamworth time to reorganise.
But Aldershot came back again with an enforced corner on 75 which Veiga eventually got his hands to after the visitors exerted some more pressure.
A good move out of midfield set up McGrath with a left footed chance after Heslop and Taylor combined but his shot was off target and didn’t trouble Bull on 77.
Rhys Day planted a header well wide on 80 from a freekick as Aldershot kept on coming forward and it took some last ditch defending to halt the run of substitute Karl Hudson on 85.
Four minutes injury time came following a double Lambs substitution but Aldershot saw the ball cleared off the line by Graeme Law after Veiga had stopped Molesley’s shot and Jake Edwards killed the game with a fantastic strike right at the death. Steve Burton played in Heslop who floated the ball over the top of the Shot defence and Edwards, unmarked and in acres of space in the area powered home from 12 yards.
Aldershot continued to push forward but the final whistle eventually went and with Southport losing The Lambs leapt off the bottom of the league.
