Lambs smash and grab from County
21 February 2012
After defeat to Luton on Saturday Tamworth welcomed Newport County AFC to The Lamb, one place and five points between them, with Marcus Law's side ahead of Justin Edinburgh's.
Law made three changes to the side from the weekend, with Francis, Reece and Patterson making way for Courtney, St. Aimie and Christie.
Kicking off towards the Castle End, The Lambs immediately got a shot away via McDonald's left footed strike from the left of the area which Thompson took cleanly at his near post.
Newport were handed a free shot at goal on 5 when Tait was adjudged to have been backing into Buchanan and Foley stepped up to take the spot kick who softly planted the ball home slightly to the right of centre with Hedge committed to his left. (0-1, 6 mins)
9: Green tried his luck from distance but Thompson was equal to it, while at the other end Foley played crossbar challenge from 20 yards out via a right footed curler and Hedge would definitely have been beaten had the shot not been so accurately aimed at the woodwork.
14: A Lambs corner on the right was headed away strongly and McDonald's return ball was pushed out to Barrow who forced Thompson to make a very good stop with a low driven shot from fully 30 yards out.
16: in an almost identical move, Newport then won a flag kick on the right at the Meadow Street End and Foley struck a left footed shot powerfully at goal but once again struck the woodwork - this time the outside of the left hand post.
22: Marna got on the end of a left sided cross from Barrow, but sent the ball high over the target from 18 yards with a left footed finish.
24: Better movement from The Lambs saw Isaac and St. Aimie, then Isaac and Tait play neat passes resulting in a hastily booted clearance and corner which Thompson punched away.
26: McDonald sent in an inviting ball for Christie to advance onto inside the area but he arrives too early and heads the chance tamely at the keeper.
30: A move out of defence after a battle from Marna to win the ball saw him release Christie down the centre of the park and with just one man in front of him he cut left and fired a shot away but it rose over the target and failed to trouble the keeper.
31: Newport won three of corners in succession without really threatening Hedge while forcing the Tamworth defence to work hard.
33: The Lambs manage to get a chance away through Marna's left footed attempt from 18 yards, but Thompson is not troubled and gathers.
36: Yakubu climbed all over the back of Christie inside the Newport half buut McDonald's dead ball is headed away and isaac's cross from the right falls just in front of everyone before being cleared.
37: Pipe caused a mini fracas by booting the ball away in frustration but no cards were shown and Barrow resumed play with a freekick.
43: After Isaac stumbled and allowed Foley to run from the half way line Green was booked for a nudge on the County man as he tried to go past him, resulting in a freekick in the right channel which Buchanan totally failed to anything with, finding the Lambs wall in the way of his strikes twice in quick succession.
45: Barrow is given time and space to try his luck with a right footed shot from distance, but only manages to lift the ball high as two minutes added time is shown.
A head injury on the halfway line to Newports's Buchanan causes a brief halt in proceedings and a drop ball restarts play shortly before the whistle blows for the break.
County get the game underway after the break and after a brief scare at the Castle End, St. Aimie crosses from the left of the box and Christie just fails to get his head on it.
50: Isacc tries his luck from 25 yard on the right channel and the ball takes a deflection but loops over the bar for a corner, which Thompson punches clear.
With the ball still in the final third, St. Aimie and Christie were both unable to get a decent shot at Thompson from a central position and the chance went as quickly as it presented itself.
55: Baker tried his luck from the left wing with a rasping drive and it looked like the fingertips of Hedge would have got to it to push it onto the bar had it not gone slightly higher and struck the top of the woodwork anyway.
58: McDonald hit a low shot across the box and it took a touch to go out for a corner which fell to Barrow and his chargedown went through the back line but found St. Aimie offside when he beat Thompson from 6 yards and the ‘goal' was chalked off.
65: The Lambs make two subs and revert to 4-4-2 to Newport's one change as Tamworth win a corner on the left and then another but the second one is forced back to the half way line and out.
72: Courtney is spoken to by Mr. Handley and Chapman fires in a high freekick for Hedge to punch away, but Newport keep up the pressure and win a corner on the left which Minshull totally fails to connect with despite a flying lunge past the far post.
76: Law makes his final change of the game, and Thompson conceded a corner which the Lambs take short and win another as Newport fail to clear. But a crowded box around the keeper causes play to stop and restart play with a freekick.
80: As Patterson sprints to the edge of the area and pushes the ball around the advanced keeper, Thompson takes him clean out with a shoulder but escapes with a yellow card for his efforts, much to the annoyance of the home faithful. Play restarts on the edge of the D with a Barrow drive against a wall of six Newport and three Tamworth players which causes the referee no end of problems and a thumping strike from the defender into the top right corner leaves Thompson beaten and The Lambs level. (1-1, 83 mins)
85: Then, almost out of nowhere Tamworth took the lead. Reece found space to get a cross to the far post and Thomas' strike back towards goal went over the line with a little help from Rodgers, to lift the roof off The Lamb. (2-1, 86 mins)
89: As The Lambs defend in numbers and move the ball up to and around the halfway line, Charles is booked for a late challenge on Patterson.
90: Four minutes added time is shown by the fourth official and Courtney is booked 35 yards out setting up Chapman with a deadball chance, but a combination of four Lambs clear the danger to the halfway line.
Tamworth do everything they can to get the ball into the corners and run the clock down, and they do exactly that, celebrating victory at the final whistle.
