Lambs slip and fall to Shripmers

FT: Tamworth 0    1 Morecambe

30 December 2006

There were three changes for Tamworth from the side that lost 1-0 to Burton on Boxing Day for the game against in form Morecambe – Steve Burton replaced Matt Williams, John McGrath replaced Kyle Storer in midfield and Cameron Belford came in for suspended goalkeeper Jose Veiga. Cameron – the son of Lambs goal keeping legend / coach came in on loan from Coventry City where he has been impressing in their reserve side.

The visitors won their first corner on 5 minutes after both sides found it hard to settle in the opening encounters. Belford punched the effort clear only as far as Craig Stanley who struck from the edge of the area on the volley but his effort was cleared by the Lambs defence.

With cold rain pouring down on the Lamb and both midfields battling for possession I was no surprise that ball control proved difficult and the ball itself spent a lot of time crossing the white lines.
Jamie Burns found space through the middle and shot just wide of Belford’s upright on 19 but wayward balls from both sides were the order of the day for the most part.
The Lambs defence dealt with the Morecambe threat as and when required while the Shrimpers defence were troubled on only a handful of occasions.
The best chance for TFC came on 43 when Darryl Taylor connected with McGrath’s cross but his header was tame for ‘keeper Steven Drench.

HT: 0-0
The Lambs won their first corner of the game in the 48th minute and despite Taiwo Atieno’s downward header Drench collected at his near post under pressure from Taylor.
Another corner was forthcoming a minute later but it was eventually cleared by the Morecambe defence as Tamworth took the game to Morecambe.
A corner for the visitors came on 60 as they came back into the game a little, but Tamworth dealt with the threat and cleared their lines effectively as the rain continued to pour.
Garry Hunter forced Belford into a double save on 62 after the slippy conditions saw the young ‘keeper drop the high ball into the box initially, but he recovered well to cut out Hunter’s attempted chip.
But it was Wayne Curtis who opened the scoring shortly after sliding the ball under the advancing Belford after a slip by Kemp allowed the ball to be threaded through the Lambs defence and Curtis burst through to bag his fifth of the season in front of the away end (0-1)
Atieno headed into the net on 79 but the effort was ruled out for offside from McGrath’s freekick on the left and Tamworth continued to pressure Morecambe from then on but just couldn’t find an effective finish to their forward play.
